A metaparadigm is a collection of theories or ideas that define how a discipline should work. These ideas for a nursing discipline are four key concepts: the patient as a whole, the patient’s health and wellbeing, the patient’s surroundings, and nursing obligations. While there are a variety of nursing theories, these four core nursing metaparadigms all lead to a holistic approach to care in which four interconnected components link a person’s wellbeing and medical health. Thus, it is necessary to analyze all four aspects of this concept and provide my personal experience acquired by implementing such a methodology into nursing activity.
The first aspect of the metapadigm is the person, affecting the patient as an individual. The personal connection comprises family members and other relevant groups to the patient, and care structures consider the person’s spiritual, social, and health-care requirements (Deliktas et al., 2019). The way a person interacts with these physical and social relationships impacts their health (Dupree, 2018). This factor argues that a person may control their health and wellbeing with dignity and self-preservation (Dupree, 2018). Consequently, this particular case focuses on the receiver of care as an individual with personal preferences.
The environment part of the nursing metaparadigms focuses on the patient’s surroundings. According to the theory, internal and external factors make up the environment, and how a person interacts with her surroundings over time impacts her health and wellness (Deliktas et al., 2019). Physical and social variables such as economic situations, geographic locations, culture, social ties, technology, and interactions with family, friends, and other people are all part of the environment (Dupree, 2018). This metaparadigm component proposes that a person’s external variables may be changed to enhance their health. As a result, by analyzing and shaping a positive environment for a patient, one may potentially increase the efficiency of nursing activity’s results.
The health component of the four metaparadigms relates to a patient’s level of wellbeing and access to health treatment. This health component is described as having several dimensions and being in continual motion. Health and wellness refer to how a person’s physical, emotional, intellectual, social, and spiritual wellbeing are incorporated into health treatment for optimal health advantages (Dupree, 2018). According to the notion, these elements impact the patient’s overall health (Deliktas et al., 2019). Thus, it would be logical to conclude that the health factor represents the physiological and mental state of a patient, their thoughts and emotions combined.
The metaparadigm’s nursing component entails providing optimal health outcomes for patients through a reciprocal partnership in a safe and caring environment. The nursing component employs knowledge, skills, technology, partnerships, professional judgment, and communication concepts to carry out duties and obligations to provide the greatest possible patient health outcome (Dupree, 2018). From this, one can conclude that the fourth aspect of the presented concept establishes the working principles by which a nurse should make decisions regarding care receiver.
Furthermore, I would like to note a positive trend in my personal experience with this methodology in nursing practice. Taking all four aspects of the metaparadigm into account has made it much easier for me to analyze and understand the patient’s needs and how to achieve them. Moreover, it should also be noted that the care receivers after whom I was taking care of were in a better mood and improved feedback from their families and caregivers. On the other hand, many of the subtleties of the theories that are integral parts of this concept still require my study and practice in their application. Considering all the above information, I would like to note that I see my direction in professional development through metaparadigm.
In conclusion, the analysis and personal experience above point to the high effectiveness of the abovementioned concepts. However, their further discussion and analysis of various practical examples will significantly impact my progress in studying this topic. Such activities are also crucial for those who have not yet tried them out in their practice; this will give them the knowledge to quickly adapt to an alternative perception of the nursing process.
