The date of this case is the 13th of January 2021. A dentist Matthew Scott Mower was stopped by the police. He was identified to be under the heavy influence of substances while driving a car. Additionally, he had handguns, ammunition and a set of brass knuckles in his vehicle, and side evidences traced back on the distribution of substances. Mower as well shown disoperation and resistance while he was being arrested. Therefore, the Board has decided to suspend his dentist license, since his substance abuse and illegal affairs can negatively affect the patients’ experience.
In summary, the dentist was charged with three felonies and three misdemeanors. The list of felonies consists of possession of substances, possession of ammunition with marijuana and the distribution of substances. The misdemeanors include driving under the influence, resisting the arrest without force, and carrying a firearm in public while under the influence. Thus, his licence was suspended based primarily on ethical concerns. That being said, the substance abuse affects mental health and a person’s behavior and treatment of others significantly. Considering that Mower was working within a service niche, it was crucial for him to maintain a proper level of mental health in order to work with people without their possible discomfort.
Therefore, in order to comply with the ethical principles, it is necessary to quit abusing substance. Moreover, a continuous therapy is required in order to work this issue through mentally, identify the trigger behind it and work on healing it. This way, a person would be able to enhance their well-being and the state of mental health in order. Hence, they would be eligible for the social service working duties due to their ability to work with people without the side influence of substances and poor mental health.
