Company Background
The Sun Country Airlines company was started in 1982, after Braniff International Airport shut down, the main shareholders were MLT Vacations owned 51% and the shut down pilots who owned 49%. The company started with only one airplane, Air Florida Boeing 727–227, however nine year down the line, it was one of the fastest growing industries in the United States; in 1991, and the company recorded an income of $9.7 million.
Currently the company’s chief executive officer is Mr. Gadded; the company has not gone this far without some hassles, in 1999, after doubling its operations and increased staffs numbers, it was faced by operation issues resulting from the September 11th United States bombing, the company has to suspend operations (Sun Country Airlines official cite, 2011).
Future changes likely to occur
The world is changing drastically; there are new approaches and moves being developed by countries, and airline industries in the efforts of getting a higher customer base. Currently increased low cost planes have evaded the airline industry; the planes have come to change the traditional flying companies used to handle their business, they are allowing low services and less comfort for less pay. Sun Country Airlines has some planes doing this although the changes are likely to be move further as plane companies engage in price wars.
In the future, after analyzing the move in the industry, there are high chances that Jumbo planes will be introduced; they are planes, which can carry large capacity of people and afford to charge them less despite having much better services than the current low cost ones offer. Again, the growth of people of different classes is likely to call for airplanes that are more comfortable. The company is likely to change to the new line of business
Role of leaders at Sun Country Airlines
At Sun Country Airlines, the leaders are the strategists and the decisions makers; they are the people who forge a pathway to the company and lead it to the attainment of its corporate goals and objectives. The success of an organization is dependent on how well it leaders can organize the available resources (both human and physical) to the best interest of the company.
Leadership is an art of managing and developing strategies to be followed in an organization: the success of an organization depends on the quality of leaders; managerial decisions are the driving force of an organization. The changing business times calls for leaders to be more vibrant and be willing to forge and guide their organization to the required destination. Change must be initiated by leaders they should support; organizational change refers to the transformation of an organization from its present state to a desirable future state in order to enhance efficiency and competitiveness (Margerison, 2002).
Role of leaders in change
When a company is undergoing a change process, leaders are supposed to see the process a success in the minimal time possible; change needs support from management, as employees are likely to be reluctant to change. Leaders are supposed to mentor, coach, counsel and train their staffs on the intended change in an organization; they should initiate communications among members of staffs to air out any challenges that might hinder the process. Subordinates should see their leaders as the change agents and feel comfortable to consult them if need be; change also needs time and monetary support from leaders (Parker, 2009).
