New technologies in restaurant automation are changing the way restaurants serve their guests. Compact mobile waiter terminals, self-ordering tablets, and self-service kiosks are gaining popularity. Kiosks are a success among visitors because they provide full control over the order and allow to prevent misunderstandings. Moreover, it is a significant advantage for introverts because it will enable them to minimize communication with waitpersons (Qsrweb, n.d.). The technology is convenient not only for the guests but also for restaurateurs because it enables them to take orders quickly when the restaurant has many spectators. In addition, to serve many people without kiosks, it is essential to expand the staff and hire new employees. Meanwhile, with today’s technology, restaurant owners can reduce staffing costs. Thus, new technology has significant benefits for clients and restaurant owners.
However, new technology also has a negative impact on workers because they lose their communication and service abilities. Thus, if self-service kiosks are broken, the restaurant has logistical problems (Hollis, 2016). Similarly, in local and authentic restaurants, self-service kiosks will have a detrimental effect on the quality of service. This is because the customers of such establishments are focused on personalized service. In order to solve this problem, it is possible to conduct a survey among regular visitors and establish what type of service is the best for them. Most surprising to me was that research indicates that customers like self-service kiosks, but they want to change how they work. For example, they would like to include a separate check function, multiple payment options, and more menu visualization (Qsrweb, n.d.). This indicates that clients want to reduce communication with staff further and not have to ask them clarifying questions.
