TED is a limited liability company that holds a set of conferences every year. It operated under the private non-profit Sapling Foundation that is aimed at spreading of great ideas in various spheres. It organizes the events that allow the smartest thinkers share their knowledge with millions of people from all over the world. Sapling Foundation wishes to create a better future by dint of such activities. TED has several programs that are more specialized and refer to a particular subject (TED Books) or vary regarding the speakers (TEDYouth). Today the main TED conference is held in Vancouver. Still, TED organizes events that can be observed in different countries and cities. They are organized independently but on the basis of the conferences and resemble it.
TED Talk refers to a speech performed by the individual who takes part in the event organized by TED including global conferences and independent ones. The talks are focused on the technology, science, culture, entertainment, art, business, and design and share the knowledge about the most vital and achievements in the spheres. TED runs on volunteering and the companies that sponsor it (Google, The Coca-Cola Company, etc.) are not allowed to take part in the conferences so that no issues occur. There is also a list of the sponsors that are prohibited and cannot be referred to not only when organizing the main conferences but also local ones (âTEDx Rulesâ par. 5). Ted gains money on organization also from the annual membership fee, book sales, etc.
TED Talks are mainly used as educational videos. They provide a brief introduction of the idea that is considered to be great and promising. As a rule, the talks are no more than 18 minutes, which makes them easy to perceive. TED Talks are available online, which allows different individuals to have access to them (âTED Talksâ par. 1). The majority of the speeches are in English, so they are often translated into other languages. Thus, TED Talks allow not only to enhance oneâs knowledge in a particular sphere but also to practice the language.
The last main conference was held on March 16-20, 2015. It was organized in 12 sections regarding their subject and hosted by different individuals. The talks described such ideas as transformation through art, ways to extract audio, contributions in 3D printing, navigating the opportunities provided by the geopolitical landscape, global relations, terrorism, the combination of biology and engineering, etc. There were also some stories from the speakersâ lives that were also connected with the achievements made in various spheres and current issues (âProgram Guideâ par. 1). In this way, it occurs to be clear that the talks are aimed to interest various people. They provided a great amount of information about the technologies, the ways it can be used in various fields, which I believe to be the most interesting part of the conference. The talks were performed along with demos and other exhibits, which made them even more attractive.
Personally, I believe that the fact that conference gathers a wide range of topics is advantageous. As the talks are not too long, the listeners gain an opportunity to hear new ideas and improve their knowledge in the shares that did not seem to be attractive before. Thus, TED Talks make the population better prepared to operate efficiently. They encourage people to develop and innovate, which is extremely important in the current society.
