To participate in a community health promotion activity, I referred to “Rainbow Russian home day care”, which is located in Wheeling, IL. The community engagement activity was aimed at making the audience understand the importance of hand washing. It was a presentation with a title “Clean hands – healthy bodies”. As the facility is a day care, the audience that was present during the activity included children who attended it. They were kids of different genres from 2 to 6 years old. The activity was voluntary and did not have any sponsors from the outside. To advertise the presentation, the day-care assistants informed the parents and children. They also printed a little poster on the wall.
The activity promoted the health and wellness of the clients served by enhancing the knowledge of children regarding the ways they can keep healthy, which was the main goal of the presentation. The necessity of washing hands and its connection to overall health condition were explained to kids. The activity was designed in regard to the mission, vision and goals of Healthy People 2020 to make it advantageous for the community. The presentation was aimed at the promotion of the creation of healthy society, decent environment and improvement of the current health condition. In this way, public awareness of how to stay healthy increased (Healthy People 2020, 2010).
I was highly involved in the creation and conduction of this activity. First of all, I offered to conduct a community health promotion event and discussed with the day-care assistants current and possible health issues faced by children. I identified several problems that I considered to be the most serious ones and commensurate with children’s ability to understand the information that would be discussed. With the help of day-care assistants, I chose the subject of the event and designed a plan. I created the presentation and made sure that it was simple and interesting enough for children not to get bored. The preparation and conduction of the event took me a week, during which I spent some time at day care to communicate with the assistants and children. The very presentation was made at home.
I believe that my involvement in the activity enhanced the event and made a difference to the clients served. First of all, I was the one who proposed to conduct an activity on this topic. I also took the leading role in the design of the presentation that was lately approved by the day care superior. I also communicated with children, which made them prepossessed and ready to interact with me during the presentation.
To my mind, the involvement in this activity improved my educational experience and professional development greatly. I got to know how to identify the main issues faced by the community and how to determine those that are to be considered at first. As my offer did not face any resistance and was gladly accepted, I was motivated to do my best when performing the activity. Thus, I deepened into the topic and learned how to make it adequate to different audiences. I taught how to interact with the professionals from other spheres when our cooperation is needed. I also realized that it is critical to find a common language with the audience and kindle its interest when the understanding and attention are required.
