Los Angeles Police Department is the police department for the city of Los Angeles. It aims at providing services of law enforcement at high standards. History

  • The police force for Los Angeles was founded in 1853.
  • It was made up of groups whose service was based on volunteerism. They were characterized with inefficiency due to vices, violence and gambling (Domanick, 2003).
  • In 1869, a force that was paid was created with six officers under police commissioners board.
  • For every 1500 people there were 70 officers in the 1900. This increased to 200 soldiers with the initiation of the civil service in 1903.

  • The LAPD has a special weapons & tactics unit. The equestrian unit has around 35 horses while the metro division has police dogs.

  • The LADP runs a radio service that is digital for the communication services. The officers have custody of mobile radios known as rovers (LAPD, 2010).

  • The LAPD has faced issues of inadequate numbers of staff and lack of enough funds thus limiting its effectiveness.
  • The safe & sober graduation is to take place in June 2010. This is aimed at promoting reduced crime and alcohol-based beverages accessibility (LAPD Blog, 2010).

  • Relationships of the police and the community is a challenge because of the perceptions of the public concerning the brutality of the police and their involvement in corruption.

The LAPD has been effective in its work. Its long history reveals the sacrifice that has been made by the force in ensuring safety in the area. The vast resources, numerous awards and community involvement point out to the fulfillment of its objectives. The advancement of the force in terms of resources and handling issues appropriately is bound to increase the confidence of the people. Though there has been success, LAPD has to be prepared to deal with future challenges adequately.
