Introduction

About July 8, 1947, some debris including dead bodies were seen from an object which had crashed near Roswell USA. There has been major controversy since the 1970s about the object which crashed between the United States military and the UFO proponents whereby, the latter insisted that a crashed unknown craft and corpses were recovered and the whole issue was concealed by the United States military through a claim that it was a weather-based balloon to detect some of the weather problems as it was light enough to go higher up. This incident has been ranked as the most contentious UFO issue ever. According to the investigations which were done on the same day by the Roswell Army Airfield, they showed that a weather balloon was recovered rather than the flying saucer. A meeting was then called whereby; debris that matched with the weather balloon description was seen.

The discovery

For more than 30 years, people who were greatly concerned including UFO researchers forgot and ignored. In 1978, Major Jesse Marcel who was in the front line of discovery in 1947 was interviewed by ufologist Stanton Friedman whereby, who insisted on the truth that it’s the US military who covered up the recovery. The National Enquirer also performed an interview with Marcel in 1980 intending to draw attention nationally and worldwide regarding the whole issue. There was an increment in the number of witnesses over the years that followed, who emerged with new important information which suggested a military operation to recover foreign crafts and foreigners from crash sites. The internal investigations which were conducted later came up with two results, one in 1995 and the other one in 1997. The first report suggested that the materials which were recovered in 1947 were as a result of a government secret program whereby, they were trying to investigate sound waves from bombs and missiles. Up to date people, magazines, and periodical journals among other forms of media have been arguing that something foreign crashed in Roswell.

Reports

Kenneth Arnold was the first person to report what he saw on June 24, 1947; he had seen a high speeding disc, and thereafter several reports of the same were seen in the United States newspapers. William Brazel also presented himself in Roswell in July 1947 to report fragments that were in a large amount over his farm. The base commander sent intelligence officer Marcel together with Sheridan Cavitt to Kenneth’s farm, whereby they took some of the remnants and returned them to Roswell for further investigations. Some remnants were taken for lab research in Ohio. This was followed by an official press release which reported that the flying saucer had been found.

Major Marcel with some of his colleagues took the whole issue with a lot of concern and decided to visit the farm again. In Roswell:

The only persons who were eyewitnesses of the flying saucer were Mr. and Mrs. Wilmot, but when they saw it they thought it was a flying disk. They both confessed that it was the Wilmot who saw it first and he summoned his wife and they both witnessed for about 40 to 45 seconds at a high level of about 1500 feet. They claimed the appearance was oval-shaped and was glowing as if it had some light inside. According to the estimates given by Wilmot, the object was about 5 feet in size from where he stood. Giving some allowances of the distance from where he was, the object was estimated to be about 15 to 20 feet in diameter. As they were observing, no sounds were noted apart from a faint hissing sound which was identified by Mrs. Wilmot for a very short period. Wilmot decided to keep the whole story to himself until the time he would hear it with someone else as he was a much-respected person in the town. However, he decided to tell the story about what he had seen later; … (Stanton and Berliner 98)

On July 9, 1947, the army performed some investigations and reported that the remnants which were seen on Brazels farm were a useful high altitude weather balloon used to determine the speed and the direction of the wind because they are light enough to go further beyond what the eyes can see. There were a lot of excitements in Roswell after this discovery, as several calls were received from England which confirmed that one of the public relations officers in London had the balloon and was going to keep it right in his office. Newton, who was much involved in investigations, confirmed that there were 80 stations of weather using that type of balloon and the remnants which were recovered were from any one of them as they had sent some earlier to determine more information about heavy guns.

Meanwhile, the reporters demanded more details after that press release which made the media and the phone’s operations to be paralyzed in New Mexico and Washington D.C. Immediately, the whole story changed completely stating that there were no identification labels or gadgets found with it and it was just a balloon for weather detection purposes. Soon after, it was suggested that an official identification of the remnant must be performed by a weather officer through Ramey. Unfortunately, whatever he found with Ramey as the debris were pictures of a weather balloon which he claimed were the recovered Roswell debris. Major Marcel made a controversial statement to the press that the object was found three weeks previously instead of stating the truth that it was discovered in the previous week. Marcel and Ramey later claimed that they were ordered by Washington to cover up the whole story with the weather balloon issue to get rid of the press persistent. After official investigations of the weather officer, there was an official press release of the weather balloon three hours later which followed Brazel going to Roswell for interrogation with the local newspaper whereby, he was accompanied by military officers.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the whole episode of what happened in July 1947 in Roswell, the research which was done and several facts which were presented by some eyewitnesses; it’s quite evident that an alien aircraft had crashed killing some foreigners. This is confirmed through some of the remnants which were collected and taken for lab testing. However, other sources from the government argue that the remnants were from a weather balloon that was used for weather purposes, as it could go far up for the best results.
