Terrorism is a global problem that poses a danger to the planet’s entire population. Therefore, countries should take various measures that will contribute to finding ways to limit this threat. This includes identifying the most dangerous terrorist group, the level of danger and ways of influencing these individuals, and how the government is currently dealing with the problem.
This study is based on sources such as the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) and the Department of Homeland Security, as they provide information about terrorism in the United States. Currently, the terrorist groups that represent the greatest threat to the U.S. are violent domestic extremists and homegrown violent extremists (Wray, 2020). This is because Internet technologies are becoming widespread in society, which can become a tool for terrorists. These terrorists pose a threat by spreading racial bias, anti-government sentiment, and sociopolitical and personal grievances against the government (Wray, 2020). I am most worried about the fact that they use social networks, as these sources of information do not have the proper level of control and sorting of positive and negative information.
At the same time, the government, including the police, is implementing different actions to ensure the safety of the citizens. One of them is “the National Terrorism Advisory System that is designed to communicate information about terrorist threats by providing timely, detailed information to the American public” (“National terrorism advisory system,” n.d., para. 1). Moreover, it uses various methods of cybersecurity and IT infrastructure (“Learn about CIA: Organization,” n.d.). These approaches show effectiveness, as they reduce the amount of terrorist information on the Internet.
In conclusion, at the moment, terrorist organizations that carry out their activities on the Internet are hazardous. Domestic violent extremists and homegrown violent extremists pose a great threat to the United States of America. The reason is that they operate through social networks, which are widespread in modern society. However, the United States Government is constantly developing new strategies to combat these terrorist groups and ensure Internet security.
