There is no doubt that women have always had a separate and often unfair treatment in the world and many societies. The fight for their rights has given more freedoms and equality but the modern world is still bound with prejudiced and unreasonable thoughts and opinions about the female population of the world.
The article “Women Are Just Better” by Anna Quindlen addresses the issue that present day men are still very much judgmental and stereotypical towards women, thinking that they are better in almost everything and that women are incapable of doing jobs they can. The purpose of the work is to show the unreasonable basis for such statement, to express the feelings of anger with shallow minded conceptions and pointless reasoning. It is also to give an insight into women’s psychology and the way the character of a woman manifests itself, even though this is a very small part of what really goes on. The message is very clear. It gives men a wakeup call about how much anger and feelings of frustration their words and actions cause to women. It explains that female population is just as skilled in any job that men do and the fact that it goes on without the majority of people seeing it, does not mean that it is non-existent. Another point of the message is to destroy the stereotype that has been around for so long and still is today. The target audience is men who are limited by their thinking and frames that have been set up by history, societies and themselves. It is written to give them an understanding and insight into what women really do and how inadequate men’s thoughts of superiority really are. It is also for women, to support their thinking and to acknowledge the hard work and time that they put into the family and social life. The language of the essay is somewhat sarcastic and humorous. It is also angry because it shows how uneasy and unfair it is for women to observe and hear all the negative and foolish statements and opinions that have no true argumentative value. The introduction of the article is written in a joking tone with a sign of sarcasm, to show how ridiculous and unimaginable some things of men are. It sets the reader up for what is to come and creates an atmosphere where women see and understand more than men. The conclusion is an admittance that men’s words and actions have made women very angry. The unfair judgments are unacceptable today, as they reflect ancient views that were the property of men who had no ability to see past their own ignorant dominance and power. The article has a high degree of effectiveness because it mixes emotion with several real world examples and cases that illustrate the role of women in the world. It shows how women are “the glue” of society and without them things would be much different—unimaginable to men. It gives specific references to real life occasions where women have numerously proven their elevated ability to carry out tasks, sometimes, with better effectiveness than men.
The author makes her statements very clear and to the point. She does not cover up with far off ideas; she says everything as it is and this very much adds to the uniqueness and strength of the article making it real and true.
