Workers in petrochemical industries and other such work places are faced by various challenges as they carry out their duties. Petrochemical industries are involved in the production of products such as ethylene, propylene, benzene among others (Langkulsen, Vichit-Vadakan & Taptagaporn, 2011). These products are very important since they are used as raw materials in manufacturing items such as fertilizers, plastics and also in the energy sector. However, the production process in the petrochemical industry is wrought with risks for the worker given the fact that it involves handling hazardous materials and working with equipments using large quantities of power.

An accident in a petrochemical industry can be catastrophic both to the worker and to the public if the chemicals are released to the atmosphere. Accidents can result from malfunctions on the part of the machines or human error on the part of the worker. Reported Cases of Injuries and Accidents in the Petrochemical Industry

There are many accidents which have been reported in the petrochemical industry in America. The accidents have been caused by human error, mechanical failures among others (LaMontagne, 2003). For example in July 23 1984, a Union Oil refinery in Illinois exploded leading to 19 deaths. In May 5 1988, a Shell Oil refinery in Louisiana explodes killing 7 workers and injuring many more. On October 23, 1989, an explosion occurred in Phillips 66 Petrochemical industry in Texas, killing 23 workers and injuring hundreds (ILO, 2011). These are just some of the reported cases of accidents in petrochemical industries.

Major Causes of These Injuries and Accidents

As already indicated, the major causes may be human error or mechanical failure. Bleck (2010) notes that some companies fail to inspect their facilities regularly to cut on operation costs and to avoid loss in production. This may lead to accidents if the facilities are worn out. Gases and other hazardous materials may spill from leaking pipes and tanks, leading to explosion or other forms of accidents.

The authorities might form committees to investigate the accident and make recommendations aimed at preventing such an accident in the future. For example, the Secretary for Labor by the name of Elizabeth Dole led a commission that investigated the Phillips 66 explosion. Challenges in Implementation

There are several challenges involved in the implementation. The petrochemical organization may not have enough money to implement the strategy. Some of the key players may fail to cooperate. The management and the workers may lose track of the implementation process.

There are several strategies that can be adopted in overcoming these challenges. The management should budget for the strategy. Stakeholders should be trained on the importance of their cooperation. Monitoring and evaluation should be carried out regularly to ensure implementation is taking place effectively.

Recommendations

This report made several recommendations. The management should train workers on the importance of risk assessment in the factory to enhance their cooperation. Workers who are ignorant are likely to oppose implementation of this strategy. External agencies such as OSHA should ensure that the management has put in place preventive measures to enhance the health and safety of workers. It is the role of such agencies to ensure that the safety of the workers is taken as a priority by the employer. The management should realize that the long term benefits of risk assessment surpass the costs involved in implementing the strategy. Realizing the benefits of this strategy will ensure that the management allocates resources to formulation and implementation of the same.
