A cinematic attempt at plunging into the depth of another culture by considering the elements of its everyday reality, “Mysterious Object at Noon” is an inimitable experiment that has produced quite peculiar results. The movie features two primary narrative techniques, namely, the documentary style and the narrative storytelling. However, instead of making the two styles clash, the director weaves them into the fabric of the movie by intertwining them. Allowing one to replace another as scenes change, the director carefully introduces the audience to a new culture. While the use of documentary would have made the process of familiarizing oneself with the Thai culture impossible and would have alienated English-speaking viewers, the selected technique helps to guide the audience and serves as the mediator between their culture and the Thai one.
In addition, the exquisite corpse technique used in the movie to reinforce the sense of a disjointed narrative contributes to the impression of a cultural kaleidoscope. However, when scrutinizing the movie closer, one will realize that, underneath the several seemingly disconnected parts of the movie, the emotions remain the same. Namely, the authors are driven by the need to show the continuous struggle and the underlying hope of the situation. By piecing the elements of the movie narrative together, one will realize that the technique of the exquisite corpse that the authors of the project used has made it possible to contribute to the multicultural dialogue. Specifically, the dialogues between people in the film, which refer to casual everyday scenarios, might seem as chaotic, yet they represent a piece of unadulterated reality viewed through the lens of local residents. Thus, the technique in question helps to create the needed impression and introduces audiences to a unique experience.
