Although Avant-Garde is perceived as something to be ahead of its time, in fashion, it is primarily the style that stands outside of all trends. In fact, Avant-Garde designers consider themselves immune to modern tendencies and directions (Richardson, 2019). One of the main reasons why this particular movement resists the main fashion trends is that the garments are abundant with black color, the combination of leather and cotton, and multiple layers (Richardson, 2019).
The main message of Avant-Garde fashion to society is a holistic approach to perceiving this style (Richardson, 2019). Designers believe an excellent matching and pairing is more critical than owning separate luxury items. Such brands as Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garsons, Walter Van Beirendonck, Julius, Ann Demeulemeester, Graig Green, Rick Owens, and Boris Bidjan Saberi utilize Avant-Garde elements to generate their apparel (Richardson, 2019). All their leather jackets and featured T-shirts represent modernism in the pure Avant-Gard manner of remaining beyond trends.
I like Avant-Garde fashion, specifically for the idea of intentionally choosing matching clothes and layering. Furthermore, I love this movement because it channels modernists’ ideas of rejecting convention and finding new ways to add value and create meaning. It seems that the Avant-Gard fashion movement can be associated with the works of modernist artists Piet Mondrian, whose works were initially abstract but later started to primarily involve simple geometric elements (Des, 2021). Similarly, Avant-Gard designers are armed with simplicity in generating their looks and styles for the podium and glossy magazines. Overall, this movement redefined the fashion industry, highlighting the importance of taste and moderation by implementing monochromatic clothing and materials that are always in trend. It allows Avant-Gard brands to maintain public interest in the items they present to the world.
