Introduction
Despite its initial simplicity for perception, art is a complex topic for analysis and research. This is because it involves creativity and critical thinking, which can sometimes spark significant debate and controversy. An example of an artist who consistently attracts the public to this topic is Banksy, who uses elements such as play, experimentation, and destruction to underscore the exaggerated importance of his works, intended for public rather than private use.
Creativity
Before proceeding to a more detailed analysis of Banksy’s activities and works, it is necessary to turn to concepts such as creativity and critical thinking. These concepts are central to considering any work of art and, for many people, determine the kind of assessment they give it. Gaining a complete understanding of these factors will foster awareness of the uniqueness of Banksy’s art and its relationship to his broader body of work.
Regarding creativity, it is essential to emphasize that it is one of the most valuable qualities of individuals. At the same time, it does not always imply the ability to create a work of art, as many consider it. Research stated that it is “a way of looking at problems or situations from a fresh perspective that suggests unorthodox solutions which are stimulated both by an unstructured process such as brainstorming and by a structured process such as lateral thinking”. creativity becomes the aspect that transforms individuals’ lives and evokes a range of emotions. Thus, the concept of research implies a broader range of actions, based on finding alternative, often non-standard, approaches and solutions in life.
Critical Thinking
Critical thinking is no less important in the context of art than creativity. It represents the ability to evaluate information using scrutiny and skepticism. In this way, individuals can make a more deliberate decision and conclude art relative to the available data. The juxtaposition of creativity and critical thinking is a driver for the formation of essential learning skills.
Critical thinking offers the opportunity to see more than is initially presented, as in the works of Ai Weiwei, whose photos of the 2000-year-old vase being smashed made a splash with the public. He expressed criticism for the destruction of the side to erect a new one, which was refined in society but forbidden in art. However, sometimes it can lead to excessive delving into the subject of discussion and to finding what is not there.
Experimentation
Experimentation and play are aspects worth paying attention to in the context of art. Experimentation has an essential place in the creative process, as it allows one to express oneself and find ways to pay attention to the gap the author wants to highlight. In this context, experience plays an essential role in generating ideas and artistic expression.
Dewey pointed out that “they are phases, emotionally and practically distinguished, of a developing underlying quality; they are its moving variations, not separate and independent”. Play, in this case, becomes an instrument for combining the characterization data and interpreting them to achieve the set goal. Vygotsky emphasized that, even at an early age, it is not merely a representation of lived experience but a reworking of lived impressions. Thus, considering these concepts is necessary when examining works of art.
Banksy’s Background
Banksy is a unique figure in contemporary art, intriguing critics and the general public alike. It is stated that his “real identity remains unknown; he is a street artist believed to have been born in Bristol, England, around 1974”. The artist began his career with street art, which gradually gained increasing recognition in society. His intricate yet straightforward drawings were subject to various interpretations, and the author himself periodically expressed their meaning independently. The lack of knowledge about the artist’s identity has contributed to the growing interest and critical questions surrounding his art.
Art Analysis
At the beginning of this work, paying attention to the video “Behind the Banksy Stunt” by The Art Assignment is necessary. This source approaches the analysis of Banksy’s stunt as confirmation that, in art, too much importance is often given to the work’s meaning. At the auction of the painting “Girl with the Red Balloon” after its sale for US$1.4 million, an unexpected thing happens: the canvas is destroyed with the help of a shredder.
Therefore, half of the image remains unusable, through which the author speaks of all the irony of the value assigned to his works. Anderson indicated that “passion for destruction is a creative passion and Banksy’s act appears part of a long anarchic tradition” and is a part of the art itself. A feature of the artist’s campaign is an interactive experience through his work, which highlights his creativity and the importance of experience while exposing him to even more criticism.
The stunt itself represents the playful, experimental aspects of the author’s work. By belittling his own work, he diminishes its value and engages in institutional criticism. In other words, Banksy is experimenting with critics and art galleries by playing on how they will perceive this destruction in relation to the work they value so much. The video showcases Banksy’s critical and creative thinking by offering insight into the author’s role in his works. This can be well received by an audience and enhance creative and critical thinking, as it will provide an opportunity to realize that not every painting or other piece of art requires the same level of deep digging as is customary.
Conclusion
In conclusion, creativity, critical thinking, play, and experimentation play a leading role in interpreting artists’ works. However, this often goes too far, and many people start looking for something in them that is not there. This problem was highlighted by the famous street artist Banksy, who destroyed half of his expensive painting right after the auction. Thus, the author highlighted the painting’s low value and, through this interactive experience, sparked further discussion about his activities.
