An email to boss, specifically, in a new work place is a challenging task since the employee is not yet aware about the culture and customs of an organisation. Martin (2014) contends that most professionals, especially when new, struggle with email writing processes especially when the email is intended for a supervisor. Since in the start, they spend a larger portion of their time sending and receiving emails, they usually overlook the mistakes and sometimes even forget the basic courtesies of writing a professional email.

These details, though seemingly small can discredit an employee’s professional image and therefore, it is vital to pay attention to the writing-ethics in the professional domain. I am currently experiencing similar communication issues since I changed my job where I am facing issues relating to the style, tone and the process of professional email writing. The narration of it and the plan I intend to follow to address these challenges have been discussed below.

I joined Public firm after working for with an open-system private firm where I had a free-style of writing an email which resembled a dialogue. My tone was informal, direct and friendly which was contradictory to the strict, formal and professional email-writing style of the Public Organisation which I recently joined. With respect to the process of email writing, I would follow a general process of communication like I did in my previous private firm, where changing the subject of email was not considered a mistake. In the Public Organisation, it was intimated to me that the subject of the email must be changed each-time in the context of the conversation, so that it is easier to locate the thread in the future.

I plan to improve the style and tone of my email-writing by working the organisation-run workshop on “formal and professional writing styles” to make improvements with my writing style. Moreover, I plan to have a closer look at the MoU of the company with an intention to understand the culture and rules and regulations of my workplace well.
