Introduction
Environmental sustainability is a concept that has been used for decades, but it still evokes rather heated debate. Different groups of people try to convince others that humans cannot possibly become environmentally friendly to the extent environmentalists want them to be. Many people claim that people are unable to maintain their comfortable lifestyles without using fossil fuels. Nevertheless, such arguments are becoming increasingly outdated, which is apparent in various parts of the world. The most recent technological advances enable humanity to be “ambitious” and change numerous dogmas (Dauncey, 2019, para. 3). Importantly, people become more optimistic about a sustainable transfer to greener practices and economies irrespective of the existing fears that are articulated by diverse interest groups.
Main body
There can be no denying that the world is becoming more environmentally friendly as various environmentally-friendly practices become common. Dancey (2019) mentions electric vehicles and solar power that can be seen as the most influential drivers of energy consumption paradigms. Brennan (2017) also concentrates on solar energy as one of the indispensable parts of modern infrastructure. Solar power is utilized to power street lights, as well as houses and entire cities. Countries impose numerous regulations to encourage the business world and the public to use green energy. This trend is gaining momentum because it is not associated with a dramatic and negative change in people’s way of life, as some proponents of old energy consumption models try to put it.
Being environmentally friendly is something new, affordable and increasingly practical. It is true that some habits and practices are being replaced or simply vanish, but this is, in the vast majority of cases, a positive change. For instance, consumerism is likely to evolve into new and more sustainable forms of consumption. People are becoming aware of the relevance of things and different aspects of their life, which is a positive trend. Using energy-saving gadgets, homes, and infrastructure is not associated with unsurmountable difficulties and inconveniences for people. On the contrary, being green opens up a wide range of opportunities for humanity and every individual.
It is necessary to remember that the Industrial revolution was also once regarded as something frightening, obscure, and hostile. People of the Middle Ages feared changes and did not want to live new lives. However, progress was inevitable and had a favorable impact on humanity that managed to reach unprecedented tops. The debate regarding greener societies is similar to the one that had preceded changes that occurred centuries ago.
Conclusion
On balance, it is necessary to stress that the arguments provided by opponents of greener societies seem to be a lame attempt to lobby the interests of the producers of traditional types of energy, such as oil companies. Of course, being environmentally friendly does not mean an immediate reduction of the use of fossil fuels worldwide. However, the share of this kind of energy will be reduced dramatically which is favorable for the planet and people. Oil and gas, as well as other fossil fuels, will make up an insignificant portion of energy resources, while the share of solar energy and other sustainable practices will gradually increase. This is the future all people long for and deserve. People need to remain ambitious to make dreams come true and bring changes that will make humanity even stronger.
