Two types of intercultural conflict could be identified in the articles on tourism in Venice. Firstly, conflict of interest is present in Street’s (2018) and Eaglescliffe’s (2022) articles. According to Martin (2022), conflict of interest occurs when disagreements arise on a path of action or have conflicting interests for a specific approach. Namely, Street (2018) describes the conflict of interests between locals and tourists regarding housing options. Tourists are interested in Airbnb homes and can pay for them seasonally, generating profit for homeowners. Meanwhile, the locals might have a lesser choice when buying a house since homeowners prefer to rent them rather than sell them. Similarly, Eaglescliffe (2022) describes a conflict between locals interested in profiting from tourists’ flow and persons who disrupt the flow by their cruise ships. Secondly, goal conflict ensues when people disagree on a desirable outcome or endpoint (Martin, 2022). As such, local entrepreneurs and several foreign investors aim to profit from Venice by amusing tourists, while its residents have a goal of quality living with a not-for-tourist infrastructure (Venezia Autentica, 2022). Thus, a conflict of goals emerges in Venice.
Managing visitors in Venice, a host nation, is complex, and there are variations in host attitudes towards tourists. For example, retreatism is seen in Eaglescliffe (2022), who writes that the market has become reliant on tourism, which is seen in the demand for tourist flow, yet the community feels overrun by visitors. To control the relationship between hosts and visitors, boundary maintenance is used (Martin, 2022). Such behavior is similar to that mentioned by Street (2018), who describes traffic regulation and segregation in Venice. Finally, all the articles could present revitalization and adoption since they articulate local entrepreneurs dependent on tourism.
Education has long-lasting consequences because it shapes perceptions of languages, conventions, traditions, and faiths. Education significantly impacts preserving or permanently modifying many cultural attitudes and values (Martin, 2022). As a result, some schools aim to set educational goals for children that adhere to their cultural aspirations. For example, In California, which aims at the value of educational equity, attempts to attain equitable educational outcomes through equal for all math programs (Hoeven, 2021). Similarly, the educational goals are being concerned when a school decides what literature children should read. Namely, Brentwood School’s parents and teachers differ in their cultural values, which results in a conflict over a book that represents “a civil rights classic to some; an outdated, problematic text to others”(Kutner, 2021, para. 3). Thus, the entire educational program depends on the cultural attitudes of its creators and their stakeholders, which makes people pay close attention to the learning goals in schools.
Young people are frequently encouraged to form strong identities, which their school’s educational goals could impact. As such, California schools’ goal of cultivating equity pushes children to embrace an identity of a growing person rather than an individual with talent or without talent (Hoeven, 2021). In a similar attempt, Brentwood School launches an anti-racism curriculum that affects all aspects of the education process in the institution (Kutner, 2021). The absence of such a program in the school in previous years could be observed through the formed identities of its alums. The school’s cultural setting has made some of its pupils into elitists and others into cognizant, rebellious, and furious regarding the educational system.
