Most older persons, particularly those residing in long-term care institutions, suffer from depression, a frequent psychological issue. In the United States alone, 63% of the population is 65 and above (The five stages of grief, 2022). About 15% of this demographic suffers from depression, and individuals with social exclusion, cognitive decline, and long-term health issues are more likely to experience the illness (The five stages of grief, 2022). This paper presents the findings of this investigation into the demographics of older people in nursing homes and how facility programming can be applied to their inhabitants.

Depression is a typical grieving process that can be brought on by life transitions, such as getting older and needing to move to a nursing home. Suicidal thoughts, despair, apathy, and detachment are possible signs of depression (The five stages of grief, 2022). These symptoms may affect the resident’s social connections, physical well-being, and quality of life. However, depression is not a lifelong illness or an indication of weakness. With enough assistance and time, one can overcome this typical and natural reaction to bereavement.

Providing facility programming for individuals suffering from depression is one method that may be used to help the occupants. Scheduled programs are provided to the inhabitants to enhance their well-being and quality of life (The five stages of grief, 2022). Evaluating each resident’s preferences and needs is critical before implementing facility programming. Then, suitable programs that match their objectives and interests, such as counseling, group therapy, and music therapy, are selected (The five stages of grief, 2022). Lastly, the program’s input and results are assessed, and any necessary modifications are made.

Finally, I have discovered that depression among senior citizens residing in assisted living facilities is a widespread and grave problem that impacts their overall health and quality of life. Social isolation and moving to a nursing home are some causes of depression among older people. Nevertheless, depression is not an inherent aspect of aging, and it is preventable and treatable with the proper facility programming and care.
