Capplan College
Introduction Businesses are asking universities and colleges to respond more quickly to the changing world and the changing needs of industry, and legislators and the public are seeking greater accountability for funds expended as a result, there has emerged a strong challenge to the traditional pattern of leadership development in higher education. The establishment of a college is usually a response to the needs of a given society.
Essentially, colleges meet certain needs of a given population thus they are usually not placed in the league of universities. In the 19th century, the number of colleges increased due to the increase in the demand for higher education beyond schooling.
It is worth noting that both colleges and universities are higher learning institutions which are established to impart knowledge and skills to students who are post secondary or high school education.
Role of universities
The traditional role of universities include teaching and research. It is worth noting that in the process of teaching, universities are aimed at providing quality education for high level professions as well as ensuring that the individual’s personality is enhanced.
In the current society, universities have diversified their roles and obligations. For instance, currently the universities have realized the globalization trend that has been taking place thus they have ensured that there is need to bring together people from different backgrounds in order to ensure that their objectives have been met.
Differences between colleges and universities
One can ask what is the difference between a college and a university? Essentially, there are differences between colleges and universities. A college is an institution which confers a collection of degrees from a specific area. On the other hand a university is a collection of colleges which confer degrees from a collection of different areas.
There are differences which the management of the transiting institutions needs to put into consideration. For instance, on the issue of fees, the college fees are slightly lower as compared to the university fees. Colleges are smaller as compared to the universities depending on the number of specializations that they offer.
This implies that in cases where the college intends to use the fees to form a major part of the running budget then this would pose a challenge. It is important for the transiting college to come up with ways and means of getting more resources to fund their programs. The college should also put into consideration the fact that the student population is bound to increase.
Thus, it is important for the institution to put in place strategies which will ensure that the population increase is under control. In addition, there should be sufficient staff and facilities to ensure that the running of the institution is not compromised.
This is because the learning style in a college setting is usually done through skill acquisition while in the university setting students learn through research and academic knowledge. Globalization and internationalization
Universities throughout the world are necessarily engaged in an ever –more – globalized environment.
Student and faculty mobility, a global job market, the internationalization of science and scholarship, and global competition for status are all part of contemporary globalization, universities everywhere must now cope with the influence of branch campuses, academic programs that are franchised internationally, and dual – degree initiatives.
Recognition that internationalization is central to the academic mission of higher education is universal, as exemplified by growing numbers of mobile students.
This is an important point to note because with the introduction of globalization, the transiting college will have to contend and work with complex issues. This is on the basis of the fact that new and different students are likely to introduce different cultures within the university. The university should therefore strive to keep structures which will keep in check any concerns that are not in line with the objectives of the university.
It is important to note that competition is also an issue among the universities across the globe. To be able to achieve a stake, the transiting college should strive to keep abreast the prevailing standards and work in line with the global standards. Conclusion
In conclusion, the nature of operations within a university is different from that which takes place in a college. It is therefore important for the stakeholders in these institutions to be able to realize these differences before they take the institution through the transition process. All the stake holders need to be brought on board in order to ensure the fundamentals of the stated institution are in place.
Furthermore, the transition process should be wary of the fact that the objective of the college will have to undergo changes in order to capture the vision and the views of the new stakeholders who are bound to join the institution. Lastly, the history of institutions which have gone through transitions should be brought to the fore in order to enable the executing committee avoid any challenges that might come to the fore.
