There is evidence that employee performance is multi-faceted with employees’ different behaviors, episodes, abilities, and personalities. This report will look at the effects of individual differences in power and nature and situational context on the performance of an organization. It is evident that people differ from each other, and the way and the reasons they disagree are not clear.

The differences in employees’ personalities are essential to the Excelsior Sales Corporation. An individual’s personality will show the people recruiting the new staff team if someone’s emotional patterns will be healthy for the Corporation. A person’s personality is influenced by biographic characteristics such as age, gender, marital status, biological heritage, genetics, experiences in life, and the way a person was brought up (Rolls, 1990).

A leader often finds that his employees differ significantly in personalities mainly because of their biological makeup. They have a different genetic makeup that affects how they act and socialize with fellow employees at work. In addition, nurturing and life experiences influence the skills and expertise they attained when growing up, often evidenced by their different ways of thinking and handling situations (Rolls, 1990).

A person’s abilities can be physical or cognitive abilities, which tell us what an individual can or cannot do. One can know whether an employee can do some job, handle some stress while working, or be completely unable to do either of them from the employee’s abilities. An employee’s cognitive abilities sometimes called their general intelligence, are mentally functional. Some of the mental functions involved are reasoning, thinking, verbal and spatial abilities.

To get the right employees for the Marketing at Excelsior Sales Corporation, the individuals should be tested if they possess well-developed abilities in the cognitive area that the Corporation needs. Some of the cognitive abilities required in such a situation are alternating attention, conception reasoning, ability to have sustained attention, leadership skills, good verbal skills, and emotion conscious (Rolls, 1990).

On the other hand, physical abilities refer to what one can do physically. This ability is essential and needs to be considered when selecting employees. This ability should be used with care while considering the American Disabilities Act during the selection of employees. When hiring people for the Marketing at Excelsior Sales Corporation, physical or mental disabilities should not be a factor in selection. This is because there is advancement in technology, and a physically disabled person can perform a good as the physically able people. There is evidence that such employees seem to be more motivated than the other employees, improving the organization’s performance (Jennifer & Gareth, 2005). They are increasingly becoming independent and can perform tasks that can be done by an average employee or even better.

A situational context plays a significant role in employee performance. Matters like individual and organizational goals and visions, overall attitudes, workplace conditions, and the nature of work play an important role in how an employee performs on a particular job. For example, if an employee understands that Marketing at Excelsior Sales Corporation is in the starting position and needs to expand to support its employees and pay them to batter salaries.

In such a situation, the employee will put effort and work hard to ensure that the Corporation meets its targets and goals so that it can grow, and the benefits will trickle down to them as the employee. On the other hand, the employees may work less as they feel the Corporation is still young and will never grow to give them a better package. In my opinion, situational context is founded on the employees’ feelings about their surroundings (Jennifer & Gareth, 2005).

In conclusion, a person’s personality is the basis of individual differences. These personalities can be biological or life experiences and cognitive and physical abilities or disabilities. The employee’s feelings and attitudes toward the work environment affect the employee’s situational context performance (Rolls, 1990). The situation may be:

  • An increase in productivity.
  • Bankruptcy.
  • Decrease in productivity.
  • Threats of company closure, among other circumstances.

Every one of the items mentioned above will affect employee performance, and the only way to select employees who best fit the positions in the Corporation is through thorough testing and investigation.
