In Ancient Greece, dominant societal norms prescribed a domestic role for women and confined them primarily to household and family responsibilities. These roles encompassed responsibilities such as managing the home and raising children, reflecting the more comprehensive societal expectations of the time (Fordham University, 2019b).
Such restrictions, however, were not merely social limitations but had deep roots in the very fabric of culture, shaping in women a demeanor that was to be hardworking within their prescribed roles. It, in turn, set a clear-cut distinction between the two genders, underlining a social structure that primarily cherished women in their capacity as carers and moral custodians of the house.
In the philosophical dialogue “The Republic,” Book V, Plato challenges traditional gender roles. Plato believed that women possessed the same potential and natural attributes as men and therefore should be allowed to contribute in every domain of society (Plato, n.d.). When this concept was introduced, it was considered revolutionary because it went against prevailing norms. It suggested that a woman’s ideal role should not be limited by her gender, but rather determined by her abilities and interests.
Xenophon’s “On Men and Women” contributes to this discourse by delving into the dynamics of the home, advocating for the teamwork of men and women, with each having dissimilar yet complementary duties. However, although acknowledging women’s traditional roles, Xenophon underscores mutual support and cooperation in running the household and raising children (Fordham University, n.d.a). A comprehensive understanding of gender roles involves recognizing Plato’s emphasis on the masculine nature of certain roles while leaving open the possibility for women to perform them.
Herodotus’s account of Artemisia at Salamis represents one of the few instances of a woman in command in war, as it deviates from gender roles (Fordham University, n.d.b). Aristotle’s description of Spartan women conveys their special rights to property ownership and to participate in physical training, emphasizing their unique societal role in Ancient Greece (Fordham University, 2019a). Taken together, the norms governing women’s societal role in Ancient Greece run into philosophical subversion, producing perspectives on the limitations and possibilities for them in their time.
