Joi is an accumulative name for a hologram designed to assist others, and in the setting of the movie, Joi is the artificial companion of K (Lay 11; O’Connor 55). Joi is among the most complex characters in Blade Runner 2049, as she is perceived as an artificial program, but upon closer examination, she demonstrates sentient abilities.
Joi is an artificial intelligence-based hologram, but she exhibits consciousness numerous times. Joi is not a person in terms of physical appearance (Lay 15). For example, she has “no biological aspect to her nature” (O’Connor 55). However, Joi can think independently, feel, and reflect on her past. First, Joi can conduct meaningful conversations with K, indicating her ability to think intelligently (Lay 15).
Second, she has genuine emotions and desires, which can be seen when she views the outside world (Lay 16). As O’Connor states, Joi “is a technological entity but demonstrates emotional intelligence” (55). Finally, Joi has memories of the actions and decisions she made, not someone else’s (Lay 16). Joy is more than simply a program, but one that has the capabilities of humans.

Because these attributes are typically associated with personhood, one can argue that Joi possesses a genuine sentience that transcends her initial function as an artificial intelligence created solely to fulfill the varying whims of others.
