Organizational Difficulties in Budget Creation
Numerous issues could arise for the administrator when developing and reviewing financial plans. Budget creation involves numerous steps and moving parts, so cooperation and collaboration should be impeccable. Before everything is decided, there may be a lot of back-and-forth during these stages with department managers (Apliqo FP&A Team, 2022).
As a result, organizational difficulties and complexity increase significantly in larger companies with numerous hierarchical business units. An organization may need up to three months to complete a budget by hand. The majority of businesses create a plan right before the new fiscal year begins. Typically, budget owners base next year’s forecast on actual data from the current year. However, an administrator may be mistaken when relying on the previous data.
Advanced Budgets
The other difficulty is that with advanced budgets, drivers will be able to determine the amount of each expense, revenue, and balance sheet line. These are estimates of the resources required to complete the task at hand, based on assumptions made during the planning process to ensure future financial stability (Risenmay, 2021). Nonetheless, this could go wrong if the driver is not chosen with sufficient care, leading to unreliable results. Therefore, the administrator must be responsible for checking every driver to obtain and save all the numbers.
Continuous Planning
The final impediment is continuous planning, which is essential when the company is large and its operations are not highly dependable or routine. Continuous planning, at a minimum, entails comparing actual deviations with the budget report monthly (Tran, 2022). Organizations should consider adjusting forecasts for upcoming months and putting “what if” scenarios into practice to develop a strategy and plan for future growth. Despite it being best practice, our clients often avoid forecasting because the budget process is challenging to complete manually and requires significant time and resources that many teams currently lack.
