As a manager, I want to inspire others to do the best at their job, meaning that I want to provide the resources and the motivation for people to complete their daily tasks at the best quality level. According to Daft (2013), in the modern environment, the essential functions of a manager are planning, organizing, leading, and controlling. Therefore, a good manager must not only be able to structure the workflow but also be a leader of the organization. From my experience as a manager, this is true because the productivity of the employees improves substantially if one is able to motivate and lead them. For example, leading by example and showing an excellent work ethic, such as being at work on time, treating others with respect, and always keeping promises, have been the basics that I have used in my managerial position. By using these simple methods that are a part of my management philosophy, I was able to set a standard for my employees and ensure that they act in the same way, which correlated with their work productivity.
Management thinking has undergone a revolution within the years of its existence. Daft (2018) states that “managers are always looking for new techniques and approaches that more adequately respond to customer needs and the demands of the environment” (chapter 2). This is especially relevant for the modern-day environment where information technology rapidly changes the way information is communicated and used. Moreover, as Daft (2018) notes in Chapter 3, managers strive to create an appropriate organizational environment that would enable the organization to respond to challenges, which are the rapid changes produced by information technologies. Hence, a manager must be up to date with the innovations and be able to implement them in their work environment.
