Introduction

Managers and leaders govern various processes in an organization. While the two concepts seem similar and potentially interchangeable, people in such ranks are likely to conduct rather distinct obligations. The roles of leaders and managers differ in their overall purpose, with the importance of each function varying depending on perspective, and one individual can perform both positions.

Roles

To explain the work of managers and leaders, it is meaningful to consider their objectives. Leaders are typically concerned with setting significant goals that unite all employees (Burns, Bradley, & Weiner, 2019). For example, I have participated in staff meetings where one person promoted major plans more than others with the same level of power.

In comparison, managers are engaged with the enactment process needed to accomplish objectives (Burns et al., 2019). For instance, among the personnel mentioned, certain executives at my former workplace were better equipped to achieve the established goals. The role of managers can be understood as achieving goals, whereas the function of leaders can be explained as facilitating plans.

Importance

The importance of leaders and managers depends on one’s perspective. From the worker’s standpoint, the former may be more significant since leaders can influence employee behaviors. From the patients’ perspective, managers, especially on the front line, may add value by being involved in providing care. From the board of directors’ perspective, the two positions are likely to be equal, as leaders set goals and managers execute them (Burns et al., 2019). Therefore, from this perspective, one role may be more important than the other.

One Person, Two Roles

An individual can perform the two functions at the same time. While having distinct obligations, managers and leaders account for interconnected tasks. For instance, one person can have the leadership skills required to advance influential objectives and also have sufficient work experience to accomplish the goals. Although it may be difficult for novice executives, experienced individuals can play both roles.

Conclusion

To summarize, the functions of leaders and managers differ in the overall pursuit and can be performed by one person, although their importance depends on perspective. Managers and leaders play closely connected roles in facilitating and achieving goals that are significant for employees, patients, and the board of directors. Understanding the two positions is essential for diverse operations within organizations to support continuous, long-term development.
