Growing up in a modest household and facing challenges in high school, he managed to overcome all obstacles and become one of the best basketball players. Even though he retired several years ago, his impact as an African-American player and promoter of self-expression continues to affect people of all ages. Michael Jordan’s key childhood events, significant steps during his rise to popularity, and qualities such as competitiveness and determination helped him build a great career.
Childhood
It is hard to disagree that a person’s childhood often shapes their habits, character, future goals, and how they treat themselves and others. When researching Michael Jordan’s early years, one can understand why he achieved great success and became admired by millions of people worldwide. Firstly, he was affected by his family, as his parents always taught him to be honest, determined, and hardworking (“Michael Jordan Biography”).
According to Thompson, Jordan’s mother and father became his role models and always highlighted the value of modesty, respect, and keeping one’s word. His grandparents also played a role in shaping Jordan’s character and attitude, ensuring that their grandchild learned some South African cultural traditions and practices. For example, they taught him to eat clay and dirt to obtain the minerals and vitamins his body needed (Thompson). Although this might seem unimportant, researchers believe it affected Michael Jordan’s personality, allowing him to remain honest and straightforward even after achieving fame.
The other impactful event was Jordan being rejected by the varsity basketball coach during his sophomore year of high school. Michael always loved sports, including baseball, football, and basketball, and he was also highly competitive, never tolerating losing any game, even cards (Jacheć 67; Thompson). This rejection was a pivotal moment in Jordan’s childhood and life. Instead of giving up and selecting another activity, he became very determined and proved his talent and value through hard work. Thus, this event greatly influenced Michael, leading him to realize that basketball was his vocation.
Rise to Popularity
People’s decisions often have significant consequences, and Michael Jordan took several interesting steps that shaped his path toward fame and success. Firstly, he agreed to collaborate with Nike in 1984, and their five-year contract turned into almost forty years of a symbiotic relationship (Baum). The basketball player was not interested in this brand before, but still accepted the contract because of the promised sponsorship.
After the Air Jordan 1 was first released, Michael wore the colored sneakers to a preseason game, which resulted in a $ 5,000 fine because NBA policy allowed only white shoes (Baum). However, this prohibition only strengthened Jordan’s desire to violate it and stand out with his sneakers during several further games, which made him remarkable. Therefore, this partnership not only brought Michael Jordan financial benefits but also made him an icon for expressing individualism in sports.
The other significant step that allowed him to become as successful and famous as he is today was his unexpected retirement in 1993. That summer, his father was murdered, and the deep grief did not allow Michael to continue playing. By that time, “Jordan had won three straight NBA titles, three regular season MVP awards, three playoff MVP titles, seven consecutive scoring titles, and he was a member of the All-Star team” (“Michael Jordan Biography”). For the following 17 months, he played for the Birmingham Barons. This period away from basketball made Jordan realize that it truly was his vocation (Digital GFC). Thus, he returned to the Chicago Bulls to prove that he had the ability, talent, and determination to get back on top.

There are several qualities for which Michael Jordan is best known, including competitiveness and hard work. As mentioned earlier in the paper, Jordan never tolerated losing and always took any game seriously. On the one hand, this might be considered a controversial quality, exhibiting the signs of unclassified behavioral addiction (Jacheć 67).
On the other hand, the former basketball player motivated himself and his teammates, always focusing on winning. Further, Michael was, and still is, a hardworking person: his father taught him to do his best in any activity, and this is the rule he has followed his whole life (Thompson). For example, after being rejected by the high school coach or after returning to basketball after a break, he trained early mornings and late evenings to get in shape.
Conclusion
To conclude, Michael Jordan dominated the basketball stadiums for decades. Motivated by his parents and grandparents to be a hardworking person, and also facing a heartbreaking rejection from his high school coach, Jordan understood that basketball was indeed his vocation. As he gained fame, he decided to collaborate with Nike, which brought him further fame and financial success, and a break from basketball for almost two years allowed him to become stronger. His personal qualities, such as determination and competitiveness, made Michael Jordan who he is now. His example illustrates the importance of continuously developing one’s skills and talents, remaining modest, and staying hardworking to achieve tremendous success ultimately.
