Since 1921, sensible regulations of cars and drivers have “reduced the fatality rate by more than 95 percent” (Kristof, 2014, para. 2). Personal Opinion and External Support
I share the author’s opinion on the need for urgent government intervention in resolving the issue. Imperfect legislation leads to mass shootings and creates an increased danger to society. The new rules may include more thorough background checks for buyers. It will help prevent firearms from falling into the wrong hands and being used for murder. However, regulations must be comprehensive and consider various aspects of the issue.
Other studies regarding gun control laws support this position. Berg et al. (2019) surveyed representatives from various professions, including criminologists, economists, and public health researchers, to assess the importance of gun policies. The research found that respondents considered a complete gun ban an ineffective solution to the issue (Berg et al., 2019). Furthermore, existing policies are ineffective in reducing the problem because they target only specific aspects. Therefore, reducing firearm mortality requires a comprehensive approach.
Kristof’s article has a broad audience interested in gun regulations. It includes both supporters and opponents of stricter laws. A counterargument to the author’s position could be the use of the Second Amendment. The Constitution establishes the “individual right to bear arms” as a means of self-defense (Kristof, 2014, para. 7). The introduction of new policies may violate one of the fundamental civil rights. However, the changes proposed by Kristof are aimed at improving the control system and not at a total ban on guns.

In conclusion, Kristof’s article highlights the main problems associated with the shortcomings of gun legislation. Using statistics and a positive example of changes in car regulations, the author highlights the importance of government intervention in addressing this issue. Moreover, this position is supported by other studies that demonstrate the ineffectiveness of the current system in reducing gun deaths. Moreover, a complete ban on weapons may cause controversial reactions in society and may not have the desired results. Therefore, an integrated approach to developing regulations and tightening them is necessary to improve social security.
