Nike’s commitment to quality and innovation has cemented its position as a top-tier brand and required it to create a dynamic and flexible supply chain to meet the needs of a demanding and ever-changing market (Nike, n.d.).
Nike’s global presence spans multiple regions, increasing the complexity of the supply chain in a highly competitive market. In this context, the ability to quickly adapt to market demands and ensure the timely availability of products becomes of greatest importance. A company’s supply chain is a logistics necessity and a strategic asset needed to maintain market leadership.
RFID Strategies
Nike can make a significant impact on its safety initiatives by integrating RFID technology into its supply chain. In this way, Nike aims to improve stock accuracy, reduce stockouts, and improve overall supply chain responsiveness by using RFID tags on select products (Li & Zhou, 2010). It involves implementing RFID tags at various supply chain stages, including distribution centers and retail stores (Pan & Liu, 2021; Chanchaichujit et al., 2020). This end-to-end approach provides end-to-end visibility, allowing Nike to track products at every critical stage of their journey.
Implementation Plan
Year 1: Pilot Phase (Current Year)
The first year of the plan is focused on a controlled pilot phase. Select manufacturing distribution centers will go through RFID integration, which will serve as a test environment to test the technology’s effectiveness (Zelbst et al., 2019; Li & Zhou, 2010). It also involves collaborating with key suppliers to integrate RFID tags into the production process seamlessly (Tan & Sidhu, 2022). The main goal is to evaluate the RFID system’s working, by identifying potential problems to refine the implementation process ultimately.
Year 2: Large-Scale Implementation
Based on the knowledge gained during the pilot phase, the second year will involve scaling up RFID implementation. In order to ensure successful RFID implementation, an organization must develop comprehensive training programs for employees at various levels (Mabad et al., 2021). Additional manufacturing facilities and distribution centers will integrate RFID technology, expanding its reach throughout the supply chain. At the same time, this technology will be integrated into the packaging process for all Nike products.
Year 3: Full-Scale Integration
The third and final year of the plan sees the full integration of RFID technology across Nike’s entire supply chain, including retail stores. This phase aims to achieve seamless synchronization and transparency at every point in the supply chain. Establishing a centralized RFID data analysis system will enable real-time monitoring, providing decision-makers with valuable information (Raj et al., 2023). In addition, RFID processes will be continuously evaluated and optimized to ensure ongoing efficiency improvements.
