The human race is characterized by its high level of variance exhibited in clothing, language, ideologies, and religion. These differences, which are mostly a result of cultural diversity and socialization, are not only visible in our ways of life, but also in the religious tenets that guide us. Throughout time, man has engaged him/herself in many religions each serving a specific purpose to its followers. As a result, there are many religions through which various cultures attain their spiritual and moral bearings to bring themselves closer to a higher power (deity). Different religions are differentiated in terms of beliefs, customs, and purpose and are similar in one way or the other. This paper shall set out to address Christians’ belief in God and how this belief plays a role in their lives.
As Borg asserts, Christianity makes sense when people strongly believe in the existence of God (61). According to the author, such an acknowledgment shows that God is part and parcel of what we do, feel, and see. Relating this affirmation to the drawing, it is evident that the person therein is stressed by the current state of affairs in his life. However, despite his troubles, it is evident that he believes in God (proven by the cross in the background). So, in essence, he might take such turbulent times as a test of faith since the belief in the existence of God lies within the affirmation that God is in all things that we encounter.
Similarly, Edwards states that God is graceful and often works in mysterious ways (28). In this regard, the man in the painting should not be in despair since God is beyond human understanding. So instead of suffering and consequently questioning the existence and justness of God, man should believe in the fact that a way out will reveal itself in due time.
As human beings, we all have encountered some mental or physical hardships that lead us into questioning the existence and intentions of God. The mere fact that we pose such questions is proof that we have surrendered our lives to God. From the drawing, it is evident that the man is wondering why life is so hard. In addition, we can assume that he is questioning God and wondering why despite his faith, God has allowed him to suffer. Such conclusions and beliefs are in line with Cannon’s sentiments. The author uses examples to show that God is compassionate and cares deeply for those who believe in him (115).
It has been established that religion is one of the most complex inventions of man. However, from the examples cited herein, I do believe that no matter how different people in various religions worship, it all leads towards one major point which is to realize our spirituality through worship and upholding the moral values dictated by each religion.
Religion is a very important aspect of us as human beings. It has been known to instill virtues and values to all and help man cope with the hardships that come with life. Additionally, it has facilitated the presence of peace and love within the human race thus helping man correlate and coexist with each other despite their differences. It is therefore prudent that the same values be taught to the generations to come to maintain our spiritual well-being and also in the hope of existing together as one in a utopia based on understanding.
