Sacramento County in California is currently building a new courthouse, which is meant to relieve overcrowding in the Gordon Schaber Courthouse. The county is approved to use a budget of $499,457,000 to construct a 543,000-square-foot 53-court-room building by 2023 (“Sacramento County”). The construction is expected to start in February 2020, and currently, the project is in the architectural design-working drawings phase (“Sacramento County”). Even though there seems to be enough money allocated for the project, the developer, the Judicial Branch of California, may want to consider additional funding sources to avoid a money shortage.
The new courthouse may attract additional funds from donations and intergovernmental cooperation. Contributions from residents, developers, private organizations, and businesses may accumulate considerable cash flow without the need for future reimbursement, which is a definite advantage of the method. However, this source of funding is unreliable, and there is no guarantee that it will be enough to raise a needed sum. Intergovernmental cooperation, such as receiving grants from the federal government, can guarantee the requested money. However, there are numerous capital projects that may compete for the same grant. In short, the Judicial Branch of California is to evaluate multiple methods for funding the project.
