I explored Nightingale Square, Industrial Heights, Acer Tech Center, and the Casper Park District on the Sentinel City virtual bus tour. The demographics of Nightingale Square were diverse, with a mix of white (80.6%), black (10.4%), Asian (3.7%), and Latino or Hispanic (31.5%) residents. 103,974 people were living in the area. On the other hand, the majority of Industrial Heights’ 38,855 people were African American. While the 352,643 people who called Casper Park District home were mainly Hispanic, the 168,390 people who called Acer Tech Center home showed signs of racial and cultural diversity.
Nightingale Square has a diverse range of ages represented. With a sizeable working-age population of 60.4%, Acer Tech Center gave the impression of being younger. Industrial Heights was more populated by retirees than younger residents, in contrast to the more diversified age mix of the Casper Park District. Nearly every neighborhood had an equal number of men and women.
With 37.5% and 22.7% of residents uninsured, respectively, Industrial Heights and Casper Park District had high poverty rates. Particularly in Industrial Heights, there were many dilapidated buildings, some covered in graffiti. Parents with children, teenagers, couples, and those with disabilities were among the many populations seen on the streets. Industrial Heights and the Casper Park District were unexpectedly populated with homeless people and beggars. In contrast to the more regulated atmosphere in Nightingale Square, dogs were often seen roaming free in Industrial Heights.
The area’s businesses ranged from grocery stores and retail establishments to pharmacies and dry cleaners. Most people got by on foot or used public transportation. Despite inequalities, social and health services were accessible to all areas. Work in Industrial Heights was more common than at Acer Tech Center, which was home to tech-related occupations.
Given the widespread problem of teen pregnancy (with 400 instances found among 15–17-year-olds), the target demographic of interest was teenagers. With a drug possession arrest rate of 16%, Sentinel City has serious health problems associated with STDs. These concerns align with international health crises, underscoring the need for comprehensive solutions. In terms of improving the overall well-being of the teenage population and implementing Healthy People 2030 aims (Pronk et al., 2021), it is essential to promote healthy sexual behaviors, enhance community capacity, and address environmental quality.
