Notably, sickle cell disease (SCD) affects millions of individuals globally and is more common in those with sub-Saharan African heritage. The unknown is the precise number of SCD patients residing in the United States. Given that SCD affects over 100,000 Americans, I do not support the practice of testing African Americans for the sickle-cell trait. About one in every three hundred sixty-five Black or African-American babies is affected by SCD. Infants born to Black or African Americans have the sickle cell trait in around 1 in 13 cases (SCT). Even though African-Americans are the most vulnerable demographic, I think it is discriminatory to screen only this group since it makes an assumption about someone’s health and condition based on ethnicity. For instance, SCD affects around 1 in every 16,300 births among Hispanic Americans. SCT patients often do not exhibit any SCD symptoms but can convey the trait to their offspring. Common infections like the flu can develop swiftly into grave situations for a kid with sickle cell disease. Therefore, screening must be done on everyone, regardless of ethnicity. Discovering if a couple has genes that increase their risk of having a kid with sickle cell disease is the first step in family planning (SCD). Sickle cell disease patients can lead full lives and participate in most activities that other individuals do. Regular visits with the primary care physician might help patients avoid specific significant issues. Nevertheless, I believe that sickle cell screening is necessary for everyone.
