In 1967, Israel had fought Egypt and managed to win in that war. Israel’s defeat in the 1967 war diminished the power of Egypt. It also led to Israel capturing large land territories in Egypt. To solve this, the Egyptians started planning for a revenge war. However, the manner in which Egypt carried out their plan for the war was too secretive; none apart from them knew that there was the occurrence of another war. In addition, in early 1971, President Sadat showed interest in signing a peace treaty with Israel; this also made Israel not think of any occurrence of war. The continuous threats from Sadat also made Israel not prepare for any war; they believed Egypt was weak and lacked war tools to declare war. The Israel information in Egypt also contributed to Israel not preparing for war, he assured Israel of the unlikelihood of any war.
The success of Egypt in the Yom Kippur War was due to President Sadat’s planned war criteria. He had come up with false signs document in order to lure Israel of the occurrence of the next war. For instance, he provided the Israelites soldiers in the southern part of Israel with the false document containing 14 false signs that were to be shown by the Egyptians in case of any war. Sadat was also very secretive; he ensured that the military intelligence within Egypt knew nothing about his plan for war. This led to the message about his attack reaching the Israelites very late.
The success of Egypt was based on collaborations. It united with many nations to enhance its success. For instance, Egypt collaborated with Syria and launched an attack on Israel. They did this rapidly in order to ensure that Israel did not have enough time to reorganize itself. Egypt also sought support from Arab nations such as Sudan, Libya, Morocco, and Algeria. Some months before the attack, President Sadat had also requested Iraq to assist him to defeat Israel. In addition to Iraq providing him with hunter jets, Iraq soldiers also aided Egypt to fight the Israelites by engaging in war against the Israelites from Golan.
Egypt had also collected enough financial support for the war. It had requested financial aid from Saudi Arabia and its immediate-early Kuwait. In addition to Saudi Arabia aiding Egypt financially, it also sent its soldiers to Israel to fight on the side of the Egyptians. Sadat also diversified his military power by receiving French weapons from Libya. He ensured that he had a good relationship with all Arab nations and Soviet Unions. His good relation with nations boosted him tremendously; he received support from countries from the North such as Algeria. Algeria provided Egypt with aircraft and strong fighters. Apart from having good relations with the members of the Soviet Union, Sadat also used tricks in gathering military support. In requesting war tools, Sadat claimed that his main intention was to test the weapons and aircraft delivered to Egypt against the weapons Israelites used.
In reality, the success of Egypt in the Yom Kippur War was due to the efforts put by President Sadat in the military sector. His close association with Arab nations contributed immensely towards his success, most of the nations supported him both financially and physically. In addition, his criteria of communicating jokingly played a crucial role in the Yom Kippur War, it led to Israel remaining unprepared for a war attack.
