Communication is a very integral part in any profession, especially when there are many employees and clients working together. This implies that the nursing profession is not left out. The nursing profession is a very interactive profession: nurses interact with doctors, fellow nurses and patients. Therefore, many problems are likely to occur if the channels of communication in this profession are not properly streamlined. The process of streamlining the communication channels may involve legislation, charters and the development of codes of practice to guide the behaviour of all nurses, whether employed or still in college.

Legislation

One of the most effective ways of streamlining the communication process is through developing proper laws to guide the behaviours of all the stakeholders in the health and social care sectors. Such laws may be through nationally recognized legislative organs or those made by individual health institutions for their employees. When the government comes up with laws meant to regulate the behaviour of all nurses, each one of them is obliged to follow them since noncompliance leads to conviction in courts of law. Similarly, when health and social care institutions come up with laws that govern the relationship between their employees and clients, cases of client mistreatment will greatly reduce because it will be easier to remind a defiant nurse of a rule that outlaws his/her behaviour.

Cases of misbehaving will also diminish since legislation is usually accompanied by punishment against individuals that do not cooperate. In the case at hand, the student-nurse could have treated the patient well if she had known about the law that required all nurses to handle their patients with dignity. She could also have known that noncompliance could earn her a jail term or a suspension from her placement.

Charters

Charters can also be very instrumental in passing messages about the roles of everybody in health and social care institutions. They clearly state the duties and responsibilities of the employees and their bosses. As a result, they help nurses remember their roles and responsibilities towards their clients. They also help their leaders earn the respect of their juniors. Having respect for their bosses will prevent them from misinterpreting their decisions, especially when they are harsh to them. If the institutions in this case had used such charters, the student-nurse would not have complained of being bullied.

The Impact of Codes of Practice

Codes of practice, usually, state the roles and responsibilities of every employee in an organization. Their main purpose is to ensure that the employees behave in a manner that is morally and socially acceptable. In a nursing setup, such behaviour mostly relates to the manner in which nurses handle their patients and how they relate with their colleagues and bosses. Therefore, the introduction of codes of practice in any health or social care institution can help ensure that nurses treat their patients as properly as possible and that there is peace and co-existence among the nurses. In the case at hand, codes of practice would help in making the student realize that nurses are supposed to treat their patients with respect and dignity.
