Introduction
Islamic fundamentalism has been the cause of the long-term hostility involving the United States and Iran. However, there are other substantive causes of this disagreement that has existed for a long time in the history of both countries. NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization), which is a military organization that is made up of countries from North America and a reasonable part of Europe, is established to enhance global security and peace (Cottam 1988, p.18). This has also been a great issue of concern in the raging war existing between the U.S and the Iranian government. Over the years, the objectives of NATO have changed to be more of military structure due to the opposition that it has faced from diverse quarters since its birth (Crane 2008, p.15).
The theocracy of Iran promotes a system of government that entirely contradicts the core values and interests upon which the NATO association was founded. This can be supported by the fact that, the Iranian system of governance exempts some vital international human rights in their values and standards of governance (Fazeli 2006, p.9). These rights include the freedom of speech and the freedom of religion and association. In addition to this, the Iranian system of governance does not uphold the doctrine of serene coexistence in the international harmonization (Mousavian 2008, p.34).
On the other hand, there is an intense border conflict between the Israelites and Pakistan. One of the major intentions of NATO is peace keeping in that region, which the Iranian government is not in support of (Holliday 2001, p.12). All this factors just give a general overview on the complexity of the upheaval that still exists between the U.S and the Iranian government. This research paper shows the importance of more research and study on the soiled relationship between the U.S and Iran. The gravity of this matter is acutely entrenched and is vital to look more into and find out which party has a better bargaining power and why (Mahmood 2006, p.25).
Objectives of the Research Paper
The main aim of the research paper is to identify, review, re-visit and re-examine why Iran has become a permanent enemy of the U.S. This is however intriguing because the U.S is the most affluent and influential country in the 21st century (Fayazmanesh 2010, p.11). Moreover, this crisis has not developed in the current century but has been prevalent since the 20th century (Cottam 1988, p.13).
The research paper will also look into the relationships that the U.S had in the 20th century and the outcome and impact they made in growth or rather the derailment of growth. In addition to this, the research paper will explain why it has been so hard for the U.S to overcome the past, compared to other nations like Great Britain that have already broken the cocoon of historical wars and grudges (January 2008,p.20).
Why does the United States government need not to under estimate Iran? This will be a question of interest in the research paper whereby all possibilities and impossibilities relating to this question will be looked into in a diverse dimension (Daniel 2001, p.16). Moreover, the vulnerability of the U.S compared to Iran and why the Iranian government feels that it has nothing to lose (Mapp 2003, p.9).
The research paper will review the current system of government in Iran. In this review, the reason for settling on this system of government will be looked into. Why neo-fundamentalism (political Islam)? , Why was fundamentalism substituted? and what shortcomings might have been in fundamentalism? (Steininger 2010, p.16)
Plan and Methodology of Research
To achieve an effective research, a programme of tracing back in the history of both countries will be inevitable. This is because in every research the root and source of a problem is important in helping one to understand the diverse situations better (Marie 2003, p.10). Secondly, the study of the Iranian system of government through Islamic sources will give appropriate knowledge on whether the system is malicious as it looks (Blake 2009, p.26). Thirdly, finding out whether the U.S has other personal interests in Iran despite the peace keeping agenda (Paarlberg 1978, p.15). Lastly, whether the held conception about the scuffle between the U.S and Iran is entirely based on the Iranians system of government.
The methodology of research will comprise of a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods. However, the qualitative method used will only be interviews with specialists in U.S internal relations, precisely people on the ground. In the quantitative methodology, questionnaires on what a variety of people believe in about this topic will be administered. In addition to this, after collecting the data in questionnaires, collating the data will be the next step. In this stage, data will be organized according to similarity and chronological order for easier referencing and analysis.
In conclusion, this research will assist any learner or interested parties to understand in a broader picture the true conceptuality of the conflict between Iran and the U.S. This research will also be aimed at explaining the reason as to why the Iranian system of government is of much interest to the U.S even after a long time of the conflict existence. On the other hand, the methodologies used in the research will also depend on the resources available.
