Founding Leaders as Strategists
Both IKEA and Gucci implemented distinctive strategies that turned out to be successful in their markets. In the first case, IKEA’s approach centers on offering affordable home furnishings, often through a self-service model. They focus on cost leadership by designing functional, flat-packed furniture. Additionally, they pay lots of attention to sustainability and eco-friendly products.
Ingvar Kamprad, the founder of IKEA, played an essential role in formulating the company’s strategy. He emphasized listening to customers’ advice, leading by example, and never wasting time (Carmichael, 2011). His visionary approach helped IKEA confirm its name on a global level.
In the example of Gucci, it pursued a strategy of exclusivity and innovation. Under the leadership of Creative Director Alessandro Michele, Gucci has embraced maximalism, blending classic luxury with a modern aesthetic. This policy revitalized the brand and made it more relatable to younger consumers. Creative directors have a significant role in establishing Gucci’s brand image and design direction (Furui, 2021). They set the tone for collections, marketing, and collaborations, contributing to the brand’s success in the realm of fashion.
Transitioning Strategies After Founders’ Withdrawal
The founder of IKEA, Ingvar Kamprad, had passed away, and the company was being led by CEO Jesper Brodin. However, IKEA continued to thrive, expanding its global influence and embracing digital transformation to adapt to changing consumer preferences (The Story of IKEA, 2023). The company’s sustainability goal was the main focus of its strategy, with plans to become climate-positive by 2030. It is crucial that IKEA’s future leaders maintain the core principles of affordability, innovation, and sustainability.
Taking Walmart as an example, it successfully transitioned from its founder, Sam Walton, to new leadership and continued to grow and dominate its industry (About Us, 2023). The ability to maintain a strong brand and adapt to changing consumer demands is critical, and Walmart effectively demonstrated this.
