The Importance of the Air Force Strengthening Its Loyalty to Its Core Values

The core values of the United States Air Force are Integrity, Service before Self and Excellence in All We Do. These values define the conduct and roles of officers in the Air Force by reminding them what it takes to accomplish the mission of this security department. They inspire officers of different ranks to always do their best and unite their members to achieve their objectives. In addition, they unify and tie them to warriors and public servants that left indelible marks in the history of the United States (United States Air Force 2013).

Integrity is defined by the Air Force as the willingness to do what is right and ignore what others do or think about an individual (United States Department of Defense 2009). This department requires its members to listen to their inner voices and control their impulses and appetites to ensure they act responsibly. This value refers to the courage of officers in combating attacks by other countries or insurgent groups, even if this puts their lives at risk. In addition, it involves honesty and this ensures officers provide accurate information regarding their operational readiness, reports and documents. For instance, members must provide accurate information about the number of enemies wounded or killed and the time taken to do so like how they did during the Iraq attacks. This value emphasizes the need for officers to have self-respect and be open, humble and just in executing their mandates.

‘Service before Self’ means that professional duties should be given preference over personal desires (United States Air Force 2013). This includes following rules that may sometimes violate an individual’s principles. For instance, it is not right for people to kill others, but these men are supposed to do so when their opponents threaten the security of Americans. Therefore, they are supposed to follow rules regarding their operations and relationships except during unavoidable circumstances. The interests of America and the Air Force troops are placed first while personal desires come last during operations. Defeatism, frustration and self-pity are not part of an Air Force officer’s vocabulary (United States Department of Defense 2009). Commanders are supposed to refrain from showing anger or defeat and must work hard to bring credit upon the Air Force and themselves. Officers in high ranks like aircraft and field controllers must have faith in the system and ensure they respect those that are above them. For instance, Staff Sergeants should not question orders from Master Sergeants regardless of their appropriateness.

Lastly, Excellence in All We Do, directs Air Force officers to develop a sustained passion for the continuous improvement and innovation that will propel this department into a long term, upward performance and accomplishment (United States Department of Defense 2009). The force aspires to provide products and services that respond to the needs of Americans and respect the regulations regarding taxpayers’ rights. Personal excellence involves attending courses and training to refresh or add skills that are important in shaping the physical and mental abilities of officers. Community excellence enables troops to use equipment and tactics that respect the rights of individuals and society when executing their operations. They must work with communities to ensure civilians understand and appreciate the role of Air Force officers in promoting security in America and other nations (United States Department of Defense 2009).

Resources excellence involves the use of equipment and property for advancing the mission of this department. It also includes the need to recruit, promote and retain workers that are committed to improving the performance of this department. Operation excellence refers to the commitment to promote the efforts of colleagues (internal) in advancing their objectives and treating the world with respect (external) and observe environmental and war regulations when there is peace or war respectively (United States Air Force 2013).

Importance of Core Values in the Modern Society

The modern world is facing serious insecurity challenges due to terrorism and economic frauds. In addition, issues like racism and political upheavals have become common in developing and developed countries. Therefore, core values are important in achieving organizational objectives and inspirations in these times of global economic, social and political instability. The United States Air Force must enforce and strengthen its core values to ensure the following targets are achieved. First, it is necessary that this department distinguishes itself as a force committed to fighting terrorism in the world. This will be achieved if it enforces and strengthens its core values (Hogue 2013).

Secondly, these values dictate personal involvement and alignment with the mission of this force. This will ensure it recruits people that understand its mission and are ready to contribute their efforts to ensure this department performs its roles properly. Thirdly, core values communicate the relevance of this department and its role in promoting security in America and other nations that it has an interest in their operations.

The importance of Officers’ Ranks to Achieving the Mission of the Organization

The United States Air Force has 14 ranks that are divided into three groups that include field, company and general officers. Senior officers ensure the force has policies that will help it to achieve its objectives (United States Department of Defense 2009).

They help in the formulation and identification of core values that will ensure there is security in this country. In addition, they supervise their juniors and ensure every officer performs his duty according to the expectations of this force (Schelske 2012). This is important in ensuring that there is accountability in the force to help it to achieve its objectives. Junior officers are in charge of field or company operations and they implement orders from their seniors. They must know the core values of this force to ensure their actions are guided by their duties. The United States Air Force is known for protecting its territories and this has been its tradition for a long time. The Air Force played important roles in quelling the Second World War and this helped nations to restore sanity in their operations. In addition, it defended the American territory and ensured it achieved its sovereignty and independence from interference by other countries. This department concentrated on the need to promote security in America. However, the administration of President George Bush introduced different policies that compel this department to attack other nations without provocation from them (Malphurs 2009).

Quotations are important in ensuring that Air Force workers are inspired and motivated to have a greater sense of pride, passion and purpose. This becomes a source of authority that helps workers to believe and follow what they are told by their seniors.
