Introduction
Several student dilemmas come with college. Most of the questions lie in the plane of people’s relationships: within a team of students, between a teacher and a student, working staff, or parents. The most frequently asked questions include adapting, meeting the majority, maintaining reputation, and understanding the purpose of going to college. Unfortunately, students are also often exposed to alcohol, drugs, and promiscuity, which leads to undesirable health effects. However, in my opinion, the main problem is precisely the ability to maintain psychological balance in a new society and adhere to values. The rest of the questions are a consequence of this problem.
Ethical Problems
Many students do not go to college to achieve academic excellence or professional skills. Often, the reason lies in getting away from parental control and becoming a regular at parties. The lack of a clear answer to the question of why a student went to college leads to a lack of understanding of the motives of their activities. Studying becomes unimportant, which often leads to conflicts with teachers and parents. Consequently, the foundation of a person’s behavior in college is their motive for admission, dictated by a soberly adopted decision.
There is also a question of the diversity of people. A student can face notable differences immediately at the stage of settling in a hostel. A relationship with a roommate shows the student’s ability to adapt to sharing a living space with strangers. The change of residence forces some students to reconsider their habits and way of behaving at home since now there is a constant observer in the room with them, who may not give up their habits. Furthermore, a neighbor also conducts illegal activities or causes psychological stress. In this case, the student is faced with a dilemma, whether it is worth taking the problem outside this room or not. Here, again, a student should make the right decisions without relying on emotions.
A student’s relationship with faculty and other college staff often directly affects performance. In most cases, interest in the subject is dictated by the interest in the teacher’s personality. The character of students is manifested in the learning process. Students often resort to cheating and asking for gratuitous help, which puts both parties in a difficult position. Expanding the student’s attention to additional scientific or social activities within the college is also partly the teachers’ merit. The students strive to stay in the college building when they are comfortable communicating in such an environment (Ahmad, 2021). Moreover, if they notice the work of other staff, greet them, and wish them a good day, they deserve a reputation as a good student. In the future, this gives confidence in communicating with peers.
Cyberbullying on social media is another major issue. The social network is an open media space that new college acquaintances are constantly viewing. Consequently, some personal secrets and seemingly harmless gossip should not be raised on public display at the college. A person may not show that he is highly dependent on communication and reputation on social networks (Ahmad, 2021). However, the student may have an internal struggle inside, including resentment, oppression, and many other negative emotions. The ability to react calmly to such problems, including the ability to laugh at oneself, makes the student inaccessible to such attacks.
Communication with other but more vital peers, who occupy the whole class’s attention, is also a separate issue. Often, these students prioritize partying over the course, and stories of weekend adventures accompany their rare college appearances. Many strive to be closer to them, to be more like them. In addition, some students even step over themselves when trying alcohol or other substances for the first time. The fear of being superfluous or not like everyone else leads to dire consequences of student drunkenness. Such fears are also a consequence of the lack of a clear position and psychological balance.
Resolving
All of the above dilemmas and questions do not have the only correct answers. Psychologically balanced students with a clear position and understanding of why they came to college are not closed persons interested only in science and books. These persons are quite open to communication and also attend parties. Emotional balance allows them to avoid conflicts both in real life and on social networks. However, the students accept themselves as they are ready for changes and learning, including their own mistakes.
Conclusion
Unfortunately, not every student, especially a freshman, can boast of such qualities. Susceptible to all of the above problems at once, even a strong enough teenager can break morally. If a student has problems in the family, the influence of the “bad” company, then such a layer of ethical problems should be solved with the help of a psychologist. An important point here is the manifestation of prudence over the presentation of grit in the eyes of peers. Many students are embarrassed to go to a psychologist, to an ambulance, or to doctors in general, for fear of appearing weak in the community’s eyes. A problematic dilemma has already been faced by many students who find themselves at the party. If one of them was poisoned with alcohol, it is worth calling an ambulance, which can make this case public and see minors drinking alcohol. The answer must always be based on the moral values and humanity of each student.
