Advanced practice nurses form the backbone of leadership in any healthcare organization. They are the people other nurses and patients look up to, with the training and experience to shoulder the burden of command (Potter et al., 2021). Some of the essential competencies I will need to perform as a leader and advocate for holistic, safe, and high-quality care include effective communication, decision-making and critical thinking, problem-solving, evidence-based approaches, and self-awareness and emotional intelligence.

Hospitals and healthcare organizations in Florida subscribe to the idea of patient-centered care. This approach centers the client in all decision-making (Potter et al., 2021). In various nursing practice situations, such as disease treatment, restorative medicine, diagnosis, and so forth, the patient should be treated as an expert in their own body responses (Potter et al., 2021).

In addition, they are encouraged to actively participate in decision-making about their health and work together with the nurse to achieve a positive health outcome. For example, in a mental health situation, the nurse is responsible for ensuring that the patient is well-informed and that the patient takes medication correctly. However, it is up to the patient to implement the coping mechanisms provided.

Some essential skills for me to lead in complex systems include knowledge of those systems, adaptability, and situational leadership. A nurse practitioner never knows in advance what situation they may end up in. Thus, the ability to navigate within a healthcare organization and adapt is crucial for success (Potter et al., 2021). Situational leadership style lends itself well to that particular skill set.

Scholarship engagement remains one of the most critical responsibilities of a nurse practitioner. Armed with knowledge, experience, and methodology, I will be able to conduct independent research. The results of these actions can improve health and healthcare outcomes. In addition, I will be able to utilize existing research to inform their practices and achieve better results for their patients and communities as a whole.
