Topic Description
The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) initiative in nursing represents a significant advancement in enhancing the quality of healthcare delivery. I believe it is a positive development, as it equips nurses with more knowledge and skills, enabling them to provide comprehensive care. The DNP movement aligns with the complexity of the healthcare system and the need for advanced practice nurses who can provide leadership in healthcare delivery.
Canady’s Study
The references provided support my opinion that the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) movement is a positive step in enhancing the quality of care in the healthcare system. Canady (2021) discusses the complementary nature of the DNP and PhD degrees in advancing the nursing profession. The article highlights the role of nurses with doctoral degrees in stewardship. It emphasizes the importance of considering factors such as funding when deciding whether to pursue a DNP or PhD. This article aligns with my opinion that the DNP movement is necessary for advancing the nursing profession.
Giardino and Hickey’s Study
The second article by Giardino and Hickey (2020) focuses on the personal and professional growth experienced by post master’s DNP students. It uses a thematic analysis of reflection papers to identify the changes and growth that occurred during the DNP program. This supports my opinion that the DNP movement equips nurses with the knowledge and skills necessary for comprehensive care and leadership in healthcare delivery.
McCauley et al.’s Study
The third article examines the factors influencing the ability of nursing schools to implement a universal DNP standard for advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). It highlights challenges such as inconsistency in messaging and curricula, certification and accreditation issues, and cost barriers (McCauley et al., 2020). While this article presents some challenges to the DNP movement, it also emphasizes the need for critical next steps to ensure the national acceptance of the DNP as the terminal practice degree in nursing. Overall, this article does not significantly influence my opinion on the DNP movement.
