Personality profile
After a personality test, I discovered that I possess a number of traits. Generally, I am an open person. I accept new ideas easily, I seek new adventure, desire creativity, and new experiences in life. This can be depicted by my insatiable desire for new knowledge, appreciation for nature and beauty, and a soft spot for work of art. I am also very aware of my feelings and creativity in the execution of my work.
I am also conscientious, always prepared for new tasks and responsibilities in life, and highly disciplined in the execution of my work and responsibilities. My main weakness is considered my concern for details. To me, schedules should be followed and all work should be completed within the set time.
I like sympathizing with others and feel their problem as though they are my own problems. Most people usually feel at ease with me since they consider me to have a soft heart. Generally, I get interested in the well-being of other people. I attentively take into consideration other people’s views before making an informed decision on any issue of concern.
Implication on Selection and Retention of Employees
The above traits have implications on the performance of a manager in his relation to the employees. On the positive side, an open personality will help a manager to easily spot the emerging trends not only in the job market but also in the overall activities of the business. Open managers are highly approachable to employees. This enables us to relate easily with the employees who take such managers as peers.
The developed relationship will improve the ability of the manager to understand the concerns of the employees and effectively address them. Managers who are open always find creative ways of doing things that attract respect to them from subordinates and peers alike. They are able to attract new people into their lives and establish strong ties. Managers who possess these traits are able to attract highly trained and experienced employees and to retain them.
Conscientious managers are responsible seekers. Their concern for detail ensures the output of their effort meets the set standards or even surpasses them. A conscientious manager is able to identify the best employees to work with. Such managers are also able to relate well with employees because of their readiness to assist employees to complete their work within specification and acceptable time.
An agreeable manager is able to work with employees due to his ability to understand their problems and to relate to them. Due to this, employees see him be more than just a manager, but also a friend who they can run to for any assistance. The employees also find him quite approachable and therefore can discuss with him issued concerning their work. In this way, the manager is able to address their problems, boost their motivation, and reduce employee turnover in the organization.
These personality traits, however, have a number of shortcomings. Open managers may find it difficult sometimes to balance work and social life. They may, in some cases, fail to understand the need of employees or take them with the seriousness desired.
Their search for knowledge and new ideas may also alienate them from employees who may interpret it as a lack of concern for their work. Concern for details can waste resourceful time as the manager tries to perfect the results (Purcell 116). It can also raise problems with employees who may take the manager as over-demanding. Finally, being agreeable may sometimes be taken as a sign of weakness which may cause problems with employees as they may not take instructions seriously. This can affect the ability to retain employees.
