The country that was chosen for the assignment in Russia. Russia covers large areas in the north of Eastern Europe and Asia. European countries are located to the west of Russia, the Pacific Ocean to the east, and the Arctic Ocean to the north and Central Asia to the south (Russian geography – regions of Russia, n.d.). The Russian Federation’s current population is about 145 million (Russian population (live), 2021).
Researchers note that Russia’s largest ethnic groups are “Russian 77.7%, Tatar 3.7%, Ukrainian 1.4%, Bashkir 1.1%, Chuvash 1%, Chechen 1%” (Russia ethnic groups, 2020, para. 1). The largest religions in terms of the number of followers in Russia are the Russian Orthodox Church, Islam, Judaism, and Buddhism (Russian geography – regions of Russia, n.d.). However, a significant part of the population is atheists. It is also worth mentioning that paganism is present in ethnic minorities, mainly those of Asian origin.
Before describing Russia’s economic situation, it has to be noted that the country is under pressure from targeted US and EU sanctions that significantly slow down economic development. In 2020, Russia’s nominal gross domestic product (GDP) was 1,689.5 US $ billion (The World Bank in Russia, 2020). Real gross domestic product per capita was “12011.50 US dollars in 2019” (Russia GDP per capita, 2019, para. 1). Russia mainly produces and exports energy resources, metals, minerals, and agricultural products. The main import categories are high technology, machinery, transport, and chemical products. The national currency of the Russian Federation is the ruble. The country has a permanent seat at the UN, is a member of WHO, The World Bank, CIS, and EAEU.
