Executive Summary
The main purpose of this research is to compare and contrast two websites, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, by means of conducting membership categorisation analysis. The research has been conducted with reference to three specific movies Toy Story, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, and Paul. Paying attention to the structure of the websites and to the peculiarity of each review, the following conclusions have been drawn.
First of all, even though the websites are different, they have a similar structure. Thus, it is possible to check the critic of the professional film reviewers, the average rating of the movie, and the rating of each visitor with some comments. Second, the similarities of the websites are also based on the additional information provided on the page, such as recommended movies and their average rating. Apart from the similarities, some differences are observed. These differences are mostly based on the diversity of visitors who place their comments.
Age, sex and social differences are exactly the main facts which can be required by the company which works on the national broadband network. The diversity of the visitors and their amount is the basis for the statistical data which should be obtained in order to create a successful national broadband network.
Introduction
The main purpose of this discussion is to provide a detailed description and analysis of the movie review websites using an efficient methodology. Paying attention to specifics and peculiarity of data for analysis, Membership Categorisation Analysis should be used as a method for research.
Background
National Broadband Network is developed with the purpose of meeting the demand of Australian society for superfast broadband. The creation of new broadband does not mean that the previously existed infrastructure is going to be ignored. Vice versa, the central role of the National Broadband Network is to construct “the fibre from the premises to the point of connection” (Hitchens, 2010, p. 215). Moreover, the main idea of the company which is going to govern the implementation of the plan for creating the National Broadband Network is to operate as a provider of the services. Thus, the consideration of the movie review websites may help us understand the role of the National Broadband Network in the sphere.
Methodology
Membership categorisation analysis is going to be used as the method for the research. The main idea of this methodology is to check the categories of the respondents who participated in the discussion of the movies at the website. This methodology is appropriate in this kind of research as it gives an opportunity to consider the social elements of the websites. Furthermore, this approach gives an opportunity to check the rules of application, which help understand the level of information credibility and trustworthy (Day, n.d.).
The research is going to be conducted on the basis of two movie review websites, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic. To make sure that the larger scope is observed, we conducted an analysis of three movies presented on those websites. Thus, the following sources have been subjected to the analysis, Toy Story Reviews (n.d.), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen Reviews (n.d.), Paul Reviews (n.d.), Toy Story (n.d.), Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (n.d.), and Paul. (n.d.).
The information we are going to obtain will be devoted to the similarities and differences of those websites in relation to information provided, sources used and respondents who take part in the discussion and whose opinion may be trusted. The membership categorisation analysis is helpful in this research as it gives an opportunity to understand whether those who express their opinion have the right to be called experts. This information will offer us reliable data on whether the websites can be used as reputable sources or not.
Findings
Having conducted a thorough analysis of two movie review websites, Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic, the following information has been revealed. The structure of these two websites is similar, even though some specific differences exist. Thus, these two websites provide an expert opinion of different critics whose point of view is valuable in the world of cinematography. Moreover, both these websites offer links to the sources where this opinion is observed.
Thus, having visited each of the analysed websites, a person can get a direct link to various reputable sources like the New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, etc. The links give a reader an opportunity to check the primary source and draw a personal conclusion about the movie. Apart from a professional point of view, ordinary websites visitors have an opportunity to express their opinion along with rating the movies.
These are the general characteristics of the websites based on the particular information taken from the detailed analysis of the three movies under discussion. Additionally, the structure of the Metacritic is better as it is possible to see how many positive and negative rates are offered apart from the general average rating of the movie.
Getting down to a closer analysis of each movie within mentioned two websites, the following information is obtained. Toy Story has been positively assessed by two websites. However, Metacritic provides more negative opinions from the audience that says about the variety of attendance and the differences in their tastes. This increases the chances to get more diverse opinions. Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen was negatively assessed by Rotten Tomatoes, but on Metacritic, more positive reviews were observed. There is a tendency to comparing this movie to the first part that helps trust the opinion of the visitors, not only to one of the experts. Many differences are observed in reviewing Paul. The visitors and the critics of Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic seem to pay attention to different aspects of the movie.
Conclusions
In conclusion, it should be stated that the websites under discussion have much more similarities than differences. However, the presence of the diverse points of view on Metacritic gives an opportunity to draw a conclusion that this website is visited by people of different age, social status and other characteristic features which may impact their opinion. Rotten Tomatoes is less diverse in this relationship and may be considered as a less reputable source of information.
Referencing the obtained data to the National Broadband Network, it may be concluded that this information is useful. The company which is going to serve the national broadband network should be aware of the diversity of the visitors in relation to their age, social and sex characteristics. Using membership categorisation analysis in relation to the websites, this information may be easily obtained. Thus, the research based on three movies can be used the national broadband network implementation.
