Robert Rodriguez has conquered the champion’s title in terms of diversity and experiments in his creative life. Sin City is a child of his vivid imagination, full of novelty and surprises.

Sin City can be considered a perfect example of the director’s devotion to his ideas. While shooting the movie, Rodriguez left the Directors Guild of America on his own accord in order to share the directing credit to Miller and Tarantino. In fact, the names of Quentin Tarantino and Frank Miller are the brands themselves, and they make certain promises to the audience. No doubt, Tarantino and Miller contributed much to the general concept of the movie.

The director’s idea initially did not imply setting stress on the deep content or philosophic reflection on the surrounding world. It is focused on creating an alternative reality and constructing “a beautiful picture” on the screen. Sin City is an eye-catching tale for young people and adults. First of all, it is recommended to those who have a good sense of humor and are able to enjoy the extravagant director’s approach. Sin City is a movie for those who are tired of the commercial movies’ standard stories and clichés.

Some mass media reviews have focused on the movie’s lack of humanity and the presence of numerous bloody episodes, which may affect the young audience. However, the directors’ grim humor has also got an alternative interpretation. Strange as it may seem, the gallons of blood, hundreds of gunshot wounds, and shocking slasher-like stages are not aimed at horrifying or filling a viewer with disgust. The director uses a psychological trick, which consists of total visual exaggeration: flashy red lipstick, feigned movements, and intonations, and decorations full of kitsch create the impression of the alternative reality, which is not able to frighten. This also neutralizes the effect of cruelty and brutality and makes the movie a witty and humorous story that can be recommended to people of every age, including the youth, without concerns.

Sin City is an unprecedented aesthetic experiment, which deserves attention considering its visual execution. The director’s team has managed to embody the comics’ aesthetics right on the screen. The movie is shot in black and white, with separate bright colored spots. Each frame looks like a page from a comic book. This incredible “authenticity” charms the viewer and makes him delightful with the Rodriguez team’s work. The appreciation of the movie’s visual execution has been embodied in the prize “For the visual shaping of the film” at the 2005 Cannes Film Festival. Thus, this movie is highly recommended not only to the comics’ fans, which will be pleased to see the screen incarnation of their favorite genre but also to those who are fond of any kind of modern visual arts.

The devotion of Rodriguez was highlighted by the mass media reviews, which distinguished the director’s “scrupulous care and obvious love” for the comic book genre (Dargis).

Finally, South Florida Sun-Sentinel feedbacked, “Really, there will be no reason for anyone to make a comic-book film ever again. Miller and Rodriguez have pushed the form as far as it can possibly go” (The Sin City). Indeed, Sin City has every prospect to become the last and the single “comic-like” movie, as one needs to have guts to compete with Rodriguez. That is why it is such a burning issue for every moviegoer to watch this movie.
