Julia Serdyuk and Ksenia Tkachenko describe the influence of modern technologies and globalization on business negotiations in their article. Globalization as well as modern technologies has changed the way of communication between people. As a result, business negotiations have acquired a lot of new rules and peculiarities. World business companies have to adapt to new rules of a game.
The authors cast light upon the correlation between management style and globalization at the beginning of the article. They point out that globalization has opened boundaries for the world business. Nevertheless, the authors highlight some difficulties on the way to a successful business. Different management styles as well as cultural differences may hamper a success of business negotiations. Management styles are closely connected to cultural values so there is no wonder that there are so many different management styles. Although management styles are divided in several groups, there are more peculiar features that make one leader different from the other. The authors provide the example of the North Americans who orient at “acting” in contrast to the Latin Americans who aim at “being” (Serdyuk & Tkachenko, 2009). As a result, temporal and space orientations are different too as well as the attitude to other people. Experienced leaders use these differences to learn something new, but sometimes this cultural barrier is too difficult to overcome.
Globalization helps to get rid of these obstructions. Various countries and companies may share their experience nowadays. For example, Japanese companies take lessons from the American ones to be more flexible while the American companies may learn a lot from the Japanese ones. The authors point out that the process of globalization provides a lot of opportunities as well as challenges to the world economy.
The authors describe the influence of globalization on business communication. It seems that with the development of modern technologies and the process of globalization there are no difficulties to keep in touch with other people even if they are far from each other. The authors consider the development of modern technologies to be very profitable for business development as far as there are no problems to organize negotiations or solve current problems at long distances. The companies may even make a contract via the internet. Nevertheless, there are some difficulties for some business companies as far as such internet contracts are not taken as reliable ones by many countries. Such distrust may be explained by some cultural peculiarities.
The negotiations have become quicker with the development of modern technologies. Business partners do not need to meet face-to-face to solve their problems or sign a contract. Although some cultural differences still make business negotiations more difficult, the process of globalization has facilitated this problem. The authors emphasize that there are common basic tendencies of negotiations that should be taken into account by different business companies. There are special courses provided by the Negotiations Training Institute of America that are available in the internet (Serdyuk & Tkachenko, 2009). There are a lot of means helping people to have a success at their negotiations.
The authors describe new possibilities as well as new challenges caused by globalization and modern technology. Globalization has made negotiations more enriching and productive. People from different countries share their business experience using the internet. Common business rules for negotiations help to overcome cultural differences and have a success of a joint venture.
