Being a resourceful technology can be applied as part of strategic measures taken to improve information accessibility and quality. It also increases operational effectiveness enhancing effectiveness in management.

The primary essence of this research paper is to exemplify the versatility and the potential of mobile computing as strategic technology capable of improving the quality and the accessibility to increase operational efficiency which translates to efficient management (Mariga, 1997).

Introduction

Technology is advancing each and every day with new and emerging technologies hitting the market. With this advancement of technology, there are many areas of information and data transmission that have grown greatly.

Technology has been advancing tremendously in the wireless networking, security, virtualization and cloud computing, internet technology, data storage, data warehousing, multimedia display technology, voice over internet protocol, open source operating systems, web services and advancement of microprocessors (Gentry, 2011).

In general, the way things used to operate before, have really been changed due to emergency of new technology. Mobile computing has not been left behind in this journey of technology advancement. In my research, I choose to put more emphasis on the current and emerging technology in mobile computing.

Mobile computing technology

Mobile computing is an area of technology which allows transmission of data and/or information through a computer device, without the necessity of a fixed physical link, but the use of a computing device even when being mobile and, therefore, changing location. Portability is one of the aspects of mobile computing.

Mobile computing has three aspects that allow it to transfer data and information from one location to another effectively. These three aspects are mobile communication, mobile hardware, and mobile software. The facet of mobile communication addresses ad-hoc communication issues, as well as the communication infrastructure networks.

It also addresses communication properties, data formats, concrete technologies and protocols. Mobile hardware is a physical device that is used to enhance communication which includes mobile devices like cellular phones and mobile accessories.

Mobile software entails the application that will be used or employed to carry out the communication. This is the group of programs that must run in the mobile device to enhance communication and data transfer.

In the past ages, mobile phones were used only for voice communication. During that era, if one had a mobile device like a mobile phone, he/she would use it for voice communication (Applegate, McFarlan & McKenney, 1996). Mobile voice communication has had a very huge increase in the number of subscribers, using the cellular networks over the last few years.

It was a tremendous advancement to the manufacturers of mobile devices since there was a large extension to this technology aiming at sending and receiving data across cellular networks (Gentry, 2011). This has greatly advanced the concept of mobile computing, since subscribers were migrating from the use of wired telephones and sending letters in order to pass messages across.

Amazingly, there are many mobile phone users than even the internet users because the majority of the mobile users have the internet in their mobile devices.

Mobile computing has advanced to the use of mobile data communication alongside mobile data communication. Mobile data communication has become a very important and rapidly evolving technology, as it allows users to transmit data from remote locations to other remote or fixed locations.

This proves to be the solution to the biggest problem of business people on the move – mobility (Yuliang, 1998).

Many devices are used in mobile computing, and with each new day, the market is gradually expecting new devices to encompass mobile computing. There are actually many types of mobile computers that have been introduced since the 1990s.

These include carputer, personal digital assistant, smart phones, tablet computer, ultra mobile pc and wearable computer (Yuliang, 1998). A carputer is used to describe mobile computer that is specially designed or modified to run in automobiles.

With the advent of smart phones and PDAs, carputers have become more powerful and included technologies like Bluetooth, since originally carputers were based on industrial personal computer technology. It is remarkable that emerging technology is influencing the design of carputer, since technology like Bluetooth have become the predominant base platform for developing carputers (Gentry, 2011).

The PDAs (personal digital assistants) also referred as the palmtop computers are mobile devices that have been designed with the functionality of personal information managers.

They have the ability to connect to the internet. They have electronic visual display that enables them to be used as mobile phones or portable media players (Yuliang, 1998). Smart phones are another category of mobile devices.

A smart phone is a high-end mobile phone that combines the functions of a personal digital assistant (PDA) and a mobile phone. Typically, today’s models also serve as portable media players and camera phones with high-resolution touch screens, web browsers that can access and properly display standard web pages.

Mobile computing has really advanced with the advent of smart phones since these smart phones have advanced computing capability and connectivity than a contemporary feature phones. Smart phones also shift over time since many phones that are considered feature phones today can have capabilities that exceed those of phones that had been promoted as smart phones in the past.

Tablet computer or tablet is a complete mobile computer, larger than a mobile phone or a personal digital assistant, integrated into a flat touch screen and primarily operated by touching the screen. It has advanced technology due to its ability to use an onscreen virtual keyboard, a passive stylus pen, or a digital pen, rather than a physical keyboard.

This depicts advancement of technology. Ultra mobile personal computer is also another mobile device (Gentry, 2011). It is a small form factor version of a pen computer, a new class of laptop which specifications were launched by Microsoft and Intel in spring 2006.

This device is actually smaller than a subnotebook which is a feature of mobile computing. Wearable computer is also another mobile device. It is an electronic device that is worn by the bearer under, with or on top of clothing.

However, the wearable computers are applied with the use of complex computational support instead of the usual hardware coded logics (Asokan, 1994).

Business benefit

Mobile computing has enabled effective flow of information which has improved the operations of businesses. With easy information accessibility, as a result of mobile computing, the flow of information from one end to another through a central fixed information system has been made possible.

Mobile computers have enabled quick and efficient retrieval of information from the central systems. This accessibility has made it possible for employees to access corporate data bases with the aim of completing ad-hoc assignments with ease (Yuliang, 1998).

Through mobile computing and the integration of technology in fixed information systems, organizations have been able to improve their operational efficiency. It also enables the structuring of information and computing power from a fixed information system to coordinate workflow to the mobile worker instead of having the employee alter the workflow by moving to areas with optimum computing configuration. (Asokan, 1994).

This implies that the mobile employee stays with the mobile computer instead of moving to the configured computer (Gentry, 2011). Other benefits associated with mobile computing include improved accuracy, efficiency, saving time and resources as well as ensuring business process re-engineering making organizational operations cost effective.

The adoption of mobile computers has improved the efficiency and effectiveness in news media operations and delivery. News reporters with news transmission electronic devices and mobile computers are able to cover news, record audio and video interviews, cover sporting events, take photographs, compose the covered news story, and eventually send it to the newsroom for final editing ready for airing or publication without going to the offices personally (Yuliang, 1998).

The healthcare sector has also benefited from the mobile computing greatly. It is now possible to carry on mobile medical care regardless of the geographical representation or locality.

Mobile healthcare providers or workers can easily access the records of a patient for referencing purposes, as well as updating the records with the current treatment or diagnostic information (Asokan, 1994). Therefore, mobile computing has made operations in organizations more effective and efficient.

Limitation of mobile computing

Mobile computing in itself has had to deal with so many limitations. The first one is security. When working with mobile devices, one is dependent on public networks which require one to be careful in usage, since there is a Virtual Private Network (Mariga, 1997).

Through the interconnections of numerous networks, it is possible to attack the VPN line. This renders security a major concern in the use of mobile computing. The computational complexity of achieving authenticity and security makes mobile computing more comprehensive in its use (Gentry, 2011).

Mobile devices primarily rely on power for their functioning. In case of power failure, the mobile computers are left to rely on battery power which is always limited. Because of this, and the compact size of the mobile devices, it leaves users to acquire expensive batteries to ensure reliable battery life (Radcliff, 1998).

This makes mobile computing even more difficult. Mobile devices can also face the challenge of interferences during transmission, for example, weather conditions and terrain may influence the signals.

Reception in tunnels, some buildings, and rural areas are often poor. This means for mobile computing to be effective transmission lines should not be interfered with (Asokan, 1994).

Mobile computing is also a potential health hazard. For example, persons who drive and use their phones at the same time are more prone to accidents as a result of distractions. The waves of cell phones are believed to have influence on sensitive medical devices, as wells as alleged health problems.

This renders the use of alternative technology for computing. The human interface with the device is also a challenge. Screens, as well as keyboards can be too small, and thus, rather hard to use (Gentry, 2011).

With all the challenges facing mobile computing, it also has advantages attached to it. For instance, low cost of the purchase of mobile devices. Mobile devices are largely in use in the today’s society (Needle, 1998).

This is because their cost has been declining with time making them affordable for majority of the people who want to use them. The size of mobile device is equally important in technology advancement. Mobile device are now very small in size which makes them comfortable for people to use them for computing as compared to very large devices (Asokan, 1994).

The weight of these devices is also commendable. They are portable, with very little weight, hence one can work with them comfortably even changing locations.

Mobile devices are location independent. Mobile device can operate with very low power as compared to other devices. This makes the devices easier to use (Gentry, 2011).

Conclusion

Therefore, Mobile computing, which is an emerging technology, is important since it enables communication between mobile personal. It has enabled effective communication and interaction among mobile users through the fixed information systems while in different geographical representations.

Its implementation can be carried through the combination of communication technologies, software, and hardware. To achieve the required business needs from the organizational information systems, it is recommendable to select and design the technologies applications (Asokan, 1994).
