The Pulitzer Prize
The Pulitzer Prize is an annual award for great achievements in various spheres, which encompass literature, online journalism, newspaper, magazine, and music. The award is administered by Columbia University, which chooses a winner for each of the 21 categories. The categories vary significantly and include Public Service, Breaking News Reporting, Investigative reporting, Explanatory Reporting, Local Reporting, National Reporting, International Reporting, Feature Writing, Commentary, Criticism, Editorial Writing, Editorial Cartooning, Breaking News Photography, Feature Photography, Fiction, Drama, History, Biography or Autobiography, Poetry, General Non-Fiction and Pulitzer Prize for Music. Winners of 20 categories receive a certificate and $15,000. The winner in Public Service receives a gold medal. Not all works in the media are automatically considered by the Pulitzer Prize. The work should be entered in a specific way, and the author is expected to pay a $75 fee before sending the work. Moreover, it is important to distinguish between entrants and nominees, as some writers and journalists tend to claim that they are nominees immediately after their works are submitted.
The Golden Globe Awards
The Golden Globe Awards honor outstanding achievements in filmmaking (American and International) and American television. All films which are considered by the jurors are to be at least 70 minutes and released for at least 7 days in Los Angeles (except for the Best Foreign Language Film category). A TV show must be produced in the US (or co-produced) and air in the US between the evening primetime hours. Jurors vote for their top five nominee choices in each category, numbering them 5 to 1. The winners then are selected by plurality voting. Currently there are numerous categories: Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language, Best Motion Picture – Animated, Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture, Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture, Best Screenplay – Motion Picture, Best Original Score – Motion Picture, Best Original Song – Motion Picture, Cecil B. DeMille Award for Lifetime Achievement in Motion Pictures, Best Television Series – Drama, Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, Best Miniseries or Motion Picture – Television, Best Actor in a Television Series – Drama, Best Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, Best Actor in a Miniseries or Motion Picture – Television, Best Actress in a Television Series – Drama, Best Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress in a Miniseries or Motion Picture – Television, Best Supporting Actor – Series, Miniseries or Motion picture made for Television, Best Supporting Actress – Series, Miniseries or Motion picture made for Television, Carol Burnett Award for Lifetime Achievement in Television. The Golden Globe Award statuette is the main prize in each category. The gold part of a Golden Globe statuette is not solid gold – it has a zinc top that is merely plated in 24-karat gold, above a marble base. They are produced for around $800 per item. The ceremony is part of a long film awards season and is held every January. Millions of dollars generated by the ceremony are donated to entertainment-related charities, as well as funding scholarships.
The BRIT Awards
The BRIT Awards are annual popular music awards organized by the British Phonographic Industry. Official Charts Company compiles the list of artists, albums, and songs that should be considered. Then the voting academy, consisting of about 1,000 members of the music industry, selects the winner. Currently, there are 10 categories: British Album of the Year, Song of the Year, British Producer of the Year, British Male Solo Artist, British Female Solo Artist, British Group, Best New Artist, Rising Star Award, International Male Solo Artist, International Female Solo Artist. The BRIT Award statuette, which is currently designed by prominent British designers, is given to the winners. The BRIT Awards are considered to be the highest-profile music awards ceremony in Britain. It is legendary due to the number of bright historic appearances of prominent musicians and multiple scandals. Nevertheless, it has become a more polished affair in recent years.
Grammy Award
Grammy Award is an award presented by the Recording Academy to honor achievements in the music industry. Entries are to be made online, and a physical copy of the work should be sent to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. Then Voting Members choose nominees and select the winners. The Academy Members are expected to choose based solely on the quality of the work without considering sales, company loyalty, and personal relationships. There are four major awards commonly referred to as the “General Field”: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist. The total number of categories is now 84. A Grammy statuette costs around $15, as it is made of zinc alloy and then gold-plated.
The MTV Video Music Awards
The MTV Video Music Awards is an award show produced by the MTV channel to honor achievements in music videos. There are multiple award categories: Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Push Best New Artist, Best Pop, Best Rock, Best R&B, Best Hip-Hop, Best Latin, Best K-Pop, Best Collaboration, Video for Good, Best Alternative, Best Music Video from Home, Best Quarantine Performance, Everyday Heroes: Frontline Medical Workers, Best Direction, Best Choreography, Best Visual Effects, Best Art Direction, Best Editing, Best Cinematography, Song of Summer, Best Group, MTV Tri-Con Award. Viewers can vote for their favorite music videos in all general categories online since 2006. A statue of an astronaut on the moon is given to the winners. The statue is currently made by the New York firm Society Awards.
