Introduction

The concept of the value and its diversity in various contexts are those aspects that allow analyzing this or that case or situation event from different perspectives and positions. To determine the significance of values regarding their uniqueness, an example of a specific event will be given. From the standpoint of the manager, analyzing values is a mandatory practice that makes it possible to broaden one’s horizons and show the comprehensive picture of a given situation but and not its individual perception.

Event Description

The considered event that took place in London three months ago was a meeting of the local environmental community in support of the Greenpeace Foundation. I was one of the organizers and took an active part in engaging interested parties and potential sponsors in the discussion. All the participants had one common goal, and their values, thus, coincided in many respects. Nevertheless, when analyzing the entire event, one can note some individual cases that affected the very concept of the value and could be interpreted differently.

Types of Values and Their Contribution

Since the purpose of the event was to discuss the current issues of environmental protection and Greenpeace assistance, societal values were pursued. This was evident because the organization in question set itself the global goals of combating pressing issues related to ecology and natural resources safety. At the same time, individual values also manifested themselves since each of the participants had personal views on his or her contribution to the common cause. The community meeting provided an opportunity for its members to feel how important collaboration can be. My colleagues and I were able to engage stakeholders in the process of reflection on those issues that were raised as the agenda of the meeting. Therefore, despite the fact that some individual aspects were touched upon and motivated the participants, the event gave societal values as key and created the conditions for discussing global problems jointly without any personal benefit.

Implications of Varying Types of Values

In case the varying types of values are promoted within the same group, this clearly creates challenges for its manager. As one of the organizers of the London event, I did not face any significant challenges because our meeting promoted societal values, and no individual gains were promised. If all the members of the discussion group had sought to achieve personal bonuses, for instance, financial benefits by investing in Greenpeace projects, this would have led to inefficient work. Organizational climate is a dynamic variable, but the goals of the meeting were associated with charity but not entrepreneurship. Therefore, neither I nor the leader of the event encountered the division of opinions on values. As a result, the meeting was productive, and all its participants were aware of the importance of individual contributions to the project’s ultimate goals.

Value Importance

It is difficult to argue which type of value is more important. In the context of the considered event, societal values were more significant in view of the task set. The members of the meeting were informed of the ultimate goals that were promoted, and no individual gains were promised. Therefore, regarding the London event and its outcomes, the social background of values was preferred.

Conclusion

Assessing values from different perspectives is a crucial manager’s task since different aspects of a specific topic are analyzed comprehensively. Involving community unification for achieving the ultimate goal demonstrates following the societal value. Nevertheless, individual motives may appear, which is also permissible in certain situations. In relation to environmental protection that was the mission of the event, the societal value prevailed and was its core.
