Introduction
Immigration is a practice or action that many professionals and skills have examined from different perspectives. Leaders who allow foreigners to work and live in their countries have recorded significant milestones in terms of economic development. In Europe and the United States, immigrants are viewed differently since they present both opportunities and disruptions in the existing markets. These developments explain why ethics and economics continue to inform the issues and concerns to do with immigration.
Business organizations that support immigration will reap positive benefits by acquiring cheap and timely labor, overcoming the problem of hiring expatriates, and being able to support existing plants or starting new ones anywhere across the globe. The purpose of this paper is to apply different case studies and thoughts to describe how immigration continues to affect global business.
Background Information
The second half of the 20th century resulted in diverse immigration patterns as many countries opened their borders to foreigners. The wave of globalization created new opportunities for promoting economic performance and marketing industrial products across the world. Many states in different regions continue to pursue the idea of regional integration, including the Americas, Africa, Asia, Middle East, Arab World, and Europe. Such developments have been encouraging people to move from country A to B in search of greener pastures (“How Does Immigration”). Consequently, the process supports the free flow of ideas, labor, and raw materials. New trends characterized by shifting global movements and immigration patterns have been recorded in many nations.
Despite such achievements or gains, many lawmakers have been forced to operate in turbulent times. In the United Kingdom, the question of immigration has been a critical determinant in the Brexit vote (Global Network Faculty). Similarly, this concern affects the decisions different governments make across the globe. Nations that used to export both skilled and unskilled workers have new experienced a paradigm shift. This is true since they are now in need of competent laborers. For example, Brazil is presently one of the countries focusing on the best measures to attract foreign talent and support its key economic sectors (Global Network Faculty). Some critics believe that leaders who ignore the benefits associated with immigration will lag behind and even fail to achieve their aims.
On the other hand, the question of immigration has remained divisive in different parts of the world. According to some people, this development is capable of affecting citizens’ welfare, experiences, and outcomes (Global Network Faculty). This means that those who attract more foreigners will be unable to provide adequate job opportunities to the local population. Additionally, some scholars have presented the challenge of insecurity to support their arguments.
However, Porter and Russell acknowledge that immigrants can introduce evidence-based insights and ideas to empower more countries to achieve their potential. This development becomes a new opportunity for overcoming most of the problems affecting the global population, such as poverty, homelessness, and inequality. The decision to allow immigrants to live and pursue their goals in a foreign country is an effective strategy for empowering more people.
Immigration and Global Business
The field of global business revolves around how corporations operate, manufacture products or services, acquire raw materials, and add value to their international customers. It encourages companies to expand their strategies by having factories, logistical systems, and distribution centers in different parts of the world. This kind of practice continues to benefit significantly from the current wave of immigration. When companies decide to operate in different countries, chances are high that they will streamline their operations and minimize costs (Portes 14). This means that they will not have to shut down in countries that have reduced labor sources.
When more people are allowed to work elsewhere, the availability of manpower will increase and make such organizations sustainable (Porter and Russell). Similarly, managers of different companies can be free to start new plants in any country without the fear of lacking adequate labor. The end result is that the nature and effectiveness of global business will improve significantly.
One of the challenges many companies planning to engage in global face encounter is that of human resources. When controlled immigration becomes a reality across the globe, such corporations will not have to worry about training and deploying expatriates to work elsewhere. Instead, they will consider the available professionals in a specific destination without thinking about their backgrounds. This initiative will ensure that all activities are pursued effectively, reduce delays, and eventually maximize organizational performance (Ottaviano). More companies will find it easier to acquire affordable labor from such immigrants. Many people will get new job opportunities while at the same time ensuring that more customers in different parts of the world acquire cheap and high-quality services or consumer products.
At an international level, the nature of business operations will improve within a short time. This is the case since companies and governmental agencies will be able to complete their logistical processes successfully. They will minimize the challenges encountered when managers are recruiting additional workers to meet the demands of customers with diverse backgrounds. For example, the presence of Indian and Chinese workers in the United States is an advantage since existing companies can hire them to serve clients from such regions (Woetzel et al.). This becomes a new opportunity for improving performance, attracting more customers, and maximizing revenues.
The case of Brazil supports the thesis that immigrant is a critical factor for supporting global business. Within the past decade, the population of migrants in this nation has increased from 268,000 to over 1.5 million (Global Network Faculty). Despite the established or existing bureaucracies and challenges, these people have made it possible for both local and international corporations to achieve their aims. This is a clear indication that other countries can consider this trend in order to record maximize benefits. States that attract and empower immigrants will have increased chances of solving their economic challenges and eventually positive economic growth rates.
Regions that pursue the spirit of a regional market acquire additional opportunities that can eventually improve business performance. For instance, the European Union (EU) has become a new hub for many immigrants from the Asian and African continents. Despite the current objections, these individuals have continued to offer a wide range of services that continue to support the demands of emerging businesses. The rate of productivity in both the construction and trucking sectors has improved significantly (Global Network Faculty). This trend can, therefore, be studied as a positive attribute of immigration on global business.
Similarly, the Middle East is today one of the fastest-growing regions across the globe in terms of business performance and economic development. The influx of both skilled and unskilled workers from different parts of the world continues to make many countries admirable tourist and global business destinations, such as the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. The provision of affordable labor has supported the political, economic, and business aims of such countries. Consequently, these nations have been supported and empowered to pursue their business objectives.
The concept of globalization supports the free flow of all factors of production, including raw materials and human resources. According to this model, the process of immigration makes it possible for companies affected by the problem of labor shortage to engage in additional business activities and be able to compete at the international arena. The destination nations will acquire high-quality materials from other regions and identify foreign markets to market local products.
This is a clear indication that immigration is a necessary evil that is capable of supporting and sustaining the functionality of many international corporations (Gheasi and Nijkamp 34). It also supports the distribution of labor and minimizes the challenges associated with the underdeveloped world. More people will be in a position to get job opportunities and eventually lead high-quality lives.
Conclusion
The above discussion has identified immigration as a necessary practice that attracts attention of different stakeholders, including politicians, community members, regions, and even continents. Despite the emerging problems associated with it, business organizations that continue to support it will reap positive benefits by acquiring cheap and timely labor, overcome the problem of hiring expatriates, and be able to support existing plants or start new ones anywhere across the world. Governments should, therefore, consider the above issues and propose superior policies that will support immigration and transform global business operations.
