The topic of relations between the state and society has always occupied a leading place, and many thinkers and scientists have attempted to solve this issue. Thus, many works have come to light considering the interaction between these two aspects. A valuable look at the proposed issue was provided by José Marti in his writing “Nuestra America” or “Our America.” In it, he argues that the state should represent the spirit of society, that is, its representation. Thus, this work will explore Marti’s ideas about the American state and the author’s criticism of America’s problems of race and governance.
Thus, “Our America” is one of the most outstanding works of José Marti. Written in the nineteenth century, this essay examines the problem of the state and society and the contribution of Latin culture and political identity (Sánchez 1, Martí 3). Thus, the author rethinks the idea of the American state and focuses on taking into account the dominant worldview and culture and the minority. Research shows that “in elaborate, elegant descriptions, Martí punctures the prestige of the ruling elites while calling for the participation of Native Americans and African Americans in the hemisphere’s future” (Fountain 8). By saying that the state should be born from the country, Marti means the inclusion of all nationalities and cultures in the life of society. For example, this applies to life’s political, economic, and social spheres.
Therefore, this work investigated the view of José Marti on the relationship between the state and society. In his work “Our America,” the author considered the question that the government should be made of the country, that is, take into account all the components of its nation, race, and culture. In his book, he also provides valuable information about Latin culture and the identity of America. Moreover, the author notes the need to create a society in which there will be no differences between races.
